4 berth campervan hire Nullarbor: room for the long straight

A 4 berth camper or motorhome is the sensible middle child for the Nullarbor: bigger than a two-berth squeeze, but not as barge-like as a six-berth when you are nosing into a roadhouse bay beside three road trains and a bloke carrying a pie like it owes him money.

Most 4 berth motorhome Nullarbor layouts sleep two above the cab and two in a rear or dinette-conversion double. Some have a shower and toilet; some are more basic 4 berth camper Nullarbor builds with a compact kitchen and external amenities expected. Read the layout carefully before booking online, because “sleeps four” does not always mean “four adults who still like each other after Penong”.

• Typical length: about 6.8–7.7 m, so it fits most powered sites but wants a wider turning circle.
• Typical height: around 3.0–3.4 m; watch servo awnings, tree limbs and old caravan park signs.
• Best layout for kids: fixed rear bed plus over-cab bed, so you are not rebuilding the lounge every night.
• Best layout for two couples: two proper doubles with a curtain or at least a bit of privacy.

The Eyre Highway is sealed all the way between Norseman and Ceduna, so you do not need a 4WD for the main Nullarbor crossing. What you do need is patience, both hands on the wheel and the humility to let a 53.5 m road train do its thing.

A loaded 4 berth campervan may sit happiest at 90–100 km/h, especially in headwinds. Fuel use often lands around 12–16 L/100 km for diesel motorhomes, and the wind can push that higher. If a road train is overtaking, hold your line, ease off slightly once it starts passing, and do not wander onto the gravel shoulder like a startled emu.

• Do: pull well off at signed rest areas before stopping for photos, lunch or a driver swap.
• Do: leave extra braking distance; a 7 m van is not a hatchback with curtains.
• Don’t: drive at dawn or dusk if you can avoid it — kangaroos, wombats and camels are expensive hood ornaments.
• Don’t: rely on cruise control in gusty crosswinds near the escarpment.

The Nullarbor is not “no fuel for 660 km” country if you stick to the highway, but the gaps are still real. Norseman to Balladonia is about 191 km, Balladonia to Caiguna about 182 km, and Border Village to Nullarbor Roadhouse about 184 km. Miss a servo because “the gauge looks fine” and the Nullarbor will calmly teach you maths.

Remote fuel can be dear — often well above city prices and sometimes in the $2.20–$3.00/L range depending on season and supply. A 70–90 L tank gives many 4 berth vans a practical touring range of roughly 450–600 km, but smart self-drivers top up at every major roadhouse. Carry at least 10 L of drinking water per person as a buffer, more in summer when 40°C days are not being dramatic, just normal.

• LPG: swap or refill options can be patchy; start full at Ceduna, Norseman, Kalgoorlie or Port Augusta.
• Water: fill potable tanks where signed; do not assume every roadhouse tap is for van filling.
• Waste: use dump points at larger towns and selected roadhouses; never empty cassette toilets in roadside bins.
• Supplies: do the big grocery shop before the crossing, then use roadhouses for top-ups, ice and servo coffee of varying moral character.

A 4 berth is a good fit for powered holiday park sites in Ceduna, Penong, Eucla, Norseman and Esperance-style end points, with enough room for the awning if the site is not hemmed in by mulga and someone’s annex from 1998. Unpowered sites also work well if your house battery, fridge and water use are under control.

Free camping is common along the highway at signed rest areas and some cliff-top areas, but rules vary by state, council and park boundary. The big one: be self-contained. If there is no toilet, no bins and no water, you need your own toilet setup, rubbish plan and enough restraint not to park 2 m from a crumbling limestone edge for the sunset shot.

• Powered sites: best for hot nights, recharging devices and running air-con when allowed.
• Unpowered sites: fine for 1–2 nights if your battery and fridge are healthy.
• Free camps: arrive before dark, park level, check wind direction and leave no trace.
• National parks and reserves: check current permits, fire bans and camping zones before you roll in.

The Nullarbor’s headline attractions are mostly reachable without pretending your hire van is a Dakar truck: Head of Bight for whales in season, the Bunda Cliffs, the Nullarbor Links golf stops, roadhouse history and that famous longest straight near Caiguna. The trap is the little side track that looks harmless until it turns into corrugations, limestone edges or soft sand.

Many rental agreements restrict unsealed roads, beach driving, station tracks and remote dirt after rain. A short signed access road may be allowed by some operators and not others, so check the terms before you book and again before you turn off. If the track is wet, rutted or makes your teeth chatter in the first 50 m, reverse out while you still look clever.

• Do: photograph any existing tyre and body damage before leaving the depot.
• Do: keep tyre pressures as recommended unless the hire operator says otherwise.
• Don’t: drive onto beaches, salt lakes or soft cliff shoulders in a 4 berth hire van.
• Don’t: follow caravans blindly; they may have permission, gear or poor judgement.
