The Albany to Brisbane campervan route that won’t cook the tyres

The cleanest albany to brisbane motorhome road trip is not the shortest-looking squiggle on a map. From Albany, run east through Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe to Esperance, point the bonnet north to Norseman, then cross the Eyre Highway to Ceduna. From there it is Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Cobar, Dubbo, Goondiwindi, Toowoomba and into Brisbane.

That keeps you on sealed highways almost the whole way. The temptations are the dirt shortcuts: station roads, beach tracks and those thin grey lines that look harmless until the corrugations shake the cutlery drawer into modern jazz. Most hire campervans and motorhomes are not allowed on unsealed roads except short, approved access to recognised campgrounds.

• Total distance: roughly 4,360 to 4,550 km, depending on camps, lookouts and supermarket detours.
• Comfortable timing: 14 days if you keep moving; 21 days if you want Esperance beaches, Nullarbor cliffs and a proper rest day in Broken Hill.
• Do: book the first and last nights, especially around school holidays.
• Don’t: plan a 750 km day after picking up the van. Your first fuel stop, first grey-water question and first fridge repack will all take longer than expected.

The first two days are the polite part of the trip. Albany to Esperance is about 481 km via Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe, with fuel available in the main towns but not every 20 minutes like a city commute. Esperance to Norseman is only about 204 km, which makes Norseman the sensible staging point before the Nullarbor.

Esperance is where many crews lose a day and nobody blames them. Lucky Bay is famous for white sand and kangaroos, but national park camping needs booking and park entry fees apply. If your motorhome is long or high, avoid sand access and soft beach shoulders; a bogged van is not a travel story, it is an expensive group activity.

• Albany to Ravensthorpe: about 294 km; top up before leaving if you are not sure of your range.
• Ravensthorpe to Esperance: about 187 km, mostly straightforward sealed road.
• Esperance to Norseman: about 204 km; fill in Esperance or Norseman before heading east.
• Do: use dump points in Albany or Esperance before remote stretches.
• Don’t: leave food scraps outside at camp. Ravens and gulls have PhDs in bin crime.

Norseman to Eucla is about 710 km, and Eucla to Ceduna another 493 km. You can technically monster through, but that is how people arrive cooked, cranky and too tired to enjoy the Bunda Cliffs. Better is to split the crossing at Balladonia, Caiguna, Madura, Cocklebiddy, Mundrabilla, Eucla, Border Village, Nullarbor Roadhouse or Nundroo, depending on daylight and wind.

Fuel is available at roadhouses, but it is often 30 to 60 cents per litre dearer than town prices and hours can change. The practical rule is simple: if the gauge is under half and the next roadhouse is 180 km away, fill up. Road trains run this highway hard; give them room, do not sit beside them, and expect a bow wave of wind when they pass.

• Norseman to Balladonia: about 191 km, one of the longer common fuel gaps.
• Balladonia to Caiguna: about 181 km, then the 90 Mile Straight begins nearby.
• Eucla to Ceduna: about 493 km via Border Village, Nullarbor and Nundroo.
• Do: carry at least 10 litres of drinking water per person in addition to the van tank.
• Don’t: park overnight right on cliff edges or in truck bays. Use signed camps and roadhouse areas.

Ceduna is a reset town: laundry, groceries, water, dump point, maybe a fish-and-chips pause if the budget survived Nullarbor fuel. From Ceduna to Port Augusta is about 469 km across open SA country. Fruit-fly quarantine rules are real here, so finish or bin restricted fruit and veg before checkpoints instead of arguing with a uniform in 38°C heat.

Port Augusta to Broken Hill is about 414 km if you run via Wilmington, Orroroo, Peterborough and Yunta. It is sealed, scenic and lonely enough that a late-afternoon kangaroo can ruin your excess. Broken Hill sits on NSW time, has good caravan park options, a dump point, supermarkets, bottle-o, galleries and that silver desert light everyone pretends they discovered first.

• Ceduna to Port Augusta: about 5 hours without dawdling; allow more in headwinds.
• Port Augusta to Broken Hill: about 4 hr 45 via Yunta.
• Water: refill in Ceduna or Port Augusta; do not assume every roadside stop has potable taps.
• Do: slow down from dusk to dawn. Roos, goats and emus are not reflective.
• Don’t: carry fresh produce through quarantine zones unless you have checked the current rules.

Broken Hill to Dubbo is about 753 km via Wilcannia, Cobar and Nyngan. It is a long day in any vehicle and a silly one in a tall camper if the wind is shoving you around the lane. Cobar makes a good overnight or lunch reset, with fuel, supplies and caravan park facilities, and Dubbo is the obvious place for a powered-site recovery night.

Dubbo to Brisbane is about 839 km via Gilgandra, Coonabarabran, Narrabri, Moree, Goondiwindi and Toowoomba, or close to that depending on your exact approach. Split it at Goondiwindi, Inglewood or Toowoomba if you want to arrive in Brisbane with mirrors, marriage and fridge contents intact.

• Broken Hill to Cobar: about 459 km; Wilcannia is the main mid-point fuel stop.
• Cobar to Dubbo: about 296 km via Nyngan.
• Dubbo to Goondiwindi: roughly 480 km, then about 350 km to Brisbane.
• Do: secure awnings, roof vents and loose gear before the windy western plains.
• Don’t: arrive at a Brisbane depot or holiday park after hours unless your check-in plan is confirmed.

On this route, the good nights are usually planned before 3 pm. You will find powered holiday parks in Albany, Esperance, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Cobar, Dubbo, Goondiwindi and around Brisbane. Between them are roadhouse stays, council rest areas and signed free camps, but rules change by shire and some stops are strictly no camping.

A self-contained van makes the albany to brisbane campervan route much easier, especially with a toilet cassette, grey-water holding and decent battery capacity. Use dump points regularly; do not leave the black-water cassette until it becomes a spiritual crisis. Many public dump points are free, while some caravan parks include them for guests only.
