On a map, the Alice Springs to Kalgoorlie drive looks beautifully direct if you point the bonnet west via the Great Central Road. In real life, that route includes long unsealed sections, Aboriginal Lands permits, remote roadhouse planning and hire-agreement fine print that can turn a holiday into an insurance argument.

For most 2WD campervan and motorhome hires, the sensible route is the long sealed arc: Stuart Highway south, across South Australia, then west on the Eyre Highway and north from Norseman. It is roughly 3,090 km before you roll into Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

• Do: treat this as a 7 to 10 day trip, longer if you want a civilised pace.
• Don’t: take a standard hired camper onto the Great Central Road unless your supplier has explicitly approved that exact road in writing.
• Reality check: the Great Central Road can be around half the distance, but it is not the default motorhome route.

The all-sealed Alice Springs to Kalgoorlie motorhome road trip is big-country driving: roadhouses, long straights, low scrub, and the occasional town that appears just when the fuel gauge starts giving you side-eye. A comfortable rhythm is one major leg per day, with one rest day at Coober Pedy or Ceduna.

Expect several 450–540 km days and one big 710 km crossing from Eucla to Norseman if you don’t overnight on the Nullarbor. You can break that at Madura, Cocklebiddy, Caiguna or Balladonia, which is usually kinder on driver and fridge alike.

• Alice Springs to Marla: 454 km; leave with a full tank and fresh water.
• Coober Pedy to Port Augusta: about 540 km; a long day with Glendambo and Pimba as key fuel stops.
• Eucla to Norseman: about 710 km; roadhouses break it up, but don’t rely on city-style opening hours.
• Norseman to Kalgoorlie: 188 km; short, sealed and a blessed relief.

Fuel is available regularly enough on the sealed route, but the Nullarbor and outback SA are not places to test a motorhome’s range for sport. Diesel and petrol can be 20–60 cents per litre higher at remote roadhouses than in larger centres, and card systems can have a bad day when the satellite link sulks.

A practical self-drive rule is to top up whenever you’re near half a tank once you leave Alice Springs, Ceduna or Norseman. Many campervans have a usable fuel range around 500–800 km depending on model, load, headwind and how hard you’re asking the automatic gearbox to work.

• Carry: drinking water separate from the van tank; allow at least 4–5 litres per person per day in hot weather.
• Check: tyre pressures before long hot legs; heat and load are tyre killers.
• Avoid: rolling into a tiny servo at 7.30 pm expecting full services, hot food and a smiling choir.

This route is well suited to self-contained campervans, but it still rewards tidy habits. Holiday parks and roadhouse caravan areas are the simplest overnight choices, especially when you need power for air-con, laundry, a shower and a proper reset after 500 km of horizon.

Public dump points are commonly available in larger stops such as Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman and Kalgoorlie-Boulder, but always confirm locally before you bet your cassette on it. Potable water taps should be signed as potable; a random tap behind the amenities block is not a solemn invitation from the plumbing gods.

• Budget: powered sites often sit roughly in the $35–$65 range, with roadhouse facilities varying a lot.
• Free camping: use signed rest areas only, obey time limits, and never drop grey water where it can run into scrub or drains.
• National parks: camp only in designated areas and book where required; fines are not a souvenir.

Road trains on the Stuart and Eyre highways can be 36.5 m long, sometimes more in the Territory and WA. If one sits behind you, hold your line, ease left where safe, and let it pass. If you’re overtaking, you need a long, clean view ahead; a campervan is not a sports car wearing curtains.

Summer temperatures can reach 40–45°C through the interior, while winter nights on the Nullarbor can drop close to 0–5°C. The Wet can affect northern approaches and dirt detours, but this sealed southern route is mostly about heat, wind, glare and fatigue.

• Do: drive early, stop before dusk, and keep headlights on in dusty or dull conditions.
• Don’t: swerve violently for wildlife; slow down, brake firmly and stay in your lane.
• Useful: UHF channel 40 is commonly used by truck drivers, though many hire vans won’t include a radio.

Before crossing from South Australia into Western Australia near Eucla, clean out fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and anything else the quarantine signs tell you to surrender. The inspection is routine, but the rules are real and the bin is cheaper than a fine.

From Norseman, Kalgoorlie feels almost urban after the Nullarbor: bigger supermarkets, bottle-o options, mechanics, laundries and proper dump-point choices. • Do: arrive with time to clean, empty the cassette and refill before handover or the next leg.
