Alice Springs to Perth campervan route: the long sealed way west

On the map, the Great Central Road looks temptingly direct: Alice Springs to Yulara, across Aboriginal lands to Warburton and Laverton, then down to Perth. In a standard hired campervan or motorhome, that is usually a very expensive daydream. It is remote, partly unsealed, permit-controlled and commonly excluded by rental conditions unless you have a suitable 4WD camper and written approval.

The sensible Alice Springs to Perth drive for most self-drivers is all-bitumen: Stuart Highway to Port Augusta, Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor, then Norseman, Southern Cross and Perth. It is longer, but it keeps you legal, insured and much less likely to be explaining corrugation damage at the depot counter.

Powered sites are useful every few nights for air-con, laundry and a full battery reset; unpowered roadhouse stops are fine when the weather behaves.

Free camping is not a magic phrase that beats signs, council rules or national park conditions. If a rest area says no camping, move on. If you are in a national park, book the correct campground, pay the fee and leave the dog outside the park system. Grey nomads have been arguing about this since the cassette toilet was invented; the signs usually win.

When a road train overtakes, hold your line, ease off slightly and let the bow wave pass. Do not drift onto the gravel shoulder unless you are stopping; soft edges can grab a tyre faster than you can say insurance excess. The Caiguna to Balladonia stretch includes the 146.6 km 90 Mile Straight, which is fun for about eight minutes and then becomes a test of snack discipline.

At the WA border near Eucla, quarantine is serious. Eat or dispose of fresh fruit, vegetables, plants and other restricted items before the checkpoint. Yes, that includes the optimistic bag of tomatoes bought in Ceduna because someone fancied salad.
