Westbound, the roads climb quickly into the hinterland, where gradients, tight corners and weekend motorbikes make a slow-and-steady approach much smarter than pretending you are in a hot hatch.

Queensland national park camping must be booked before you set up, usually online, and fees are around the low single digits per person per night. NSW national parks also require bookings for many campgrounds, and some parks charge vehicle entry. Generators, pets, fires and grey-water dumping are restricted far more often than first-timers expect.
