Bendigo to Kalgoorlie campervan route across the Nullarbor

You can physically drive Bendigo to Kalgoorlie in four very long days, but that is the sort of plan made by someone who has not yet met a crosswind near Penong or a queue at the Ceduna quarantine bin. For a comfortable bendigo to kalgoorlie motorhome road trip, allow 7 to 10 days.

The road is sealed the whole way if you stay on the Calder, Sturt, Augusta, Eyre and Coolgardie-Esperance highways. The trick is not road quality; it is fatigue, fuel planning, heat and the simple fact that western New South Wales, South Australia and the Nullarbor do not care about your spreadsheet.

• Minimum sensible pace: 6 to 7 days, with several 450 to 550 km driving days.
• Better pace: 8 to 10 days, with time for Mildura, the Spencer Gulf, Ceduna and a Nullarbor breather.
• Driving rule: be parked before dusk; roos, wombats and wandering stock become expensive bonnet ornaments after dark.

From Bendigo, roll north-west on the Calder Highway to Mildura, then cross into South Australia via the Sturt Highway. From there the route bends through the Riverland and Mid North to Port Augusta, joins the Eyre Highway at the top of Spencer Gulf, and keeps going until the bitumen finally drops you into Norseman and Kalgoorlie.

The longest no-nonsense fuel gaps are not 600 km, despite the pub talk, but they are still long enough to punish sloppy planning. Balladonia to Norseman is about 192 km, Caiguna to Balladonia about 181 km, and Nullarbor Roadhouse to Border Village about 184 km. In a motorhome doing 12 to 16 L/100 km into a headwind, that matters.

• Top-up towns: Bendigo, Mildura, Renmark, Port Augusta, Kimba, Ceduna, Penong, Nullarbor, Eucla, Mundrabilla, Madura, Cocklebiddy, Caiguna, Balladonia, Norseman, Kalgoorlie.
• Best habit: refuel whenever the tank drops below half west of Ceduna.
• Groceries: do a proper shop before Ceduna; roadhouse shelves are handy, not cheap supermarkets.
• Do not: rely on every roadhouse having your preferred LPG bottle swap, AdBlue or tyre size.

This route is friendly to self-contained vans, but it is not a free-for-all. Caravan parks in Mildura, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Eucla, Norseman and Kalgoorlie give you showers, laundry, power and water. Powered sites commonly sit around the $40 to $70 per night mark, varying by season and location.

Free and low-cost camps appear along the Eyre Highway, including town RV stops and designated rest areas, but read the signs every time. Some are 24-hour only, some ban fires, and some require you to be genuinely self-contained. Dump points are available at major towns such as Mildura, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman and Kalgoorlie, with additional facilities at selected roadhouses.

• Good first-night rhythm: powered site in Mildura, then Port Augusta or Kimba, then Ceduna before the Nullarbor.
• Water: fill before crossing the Nullarbor; carry at least 10 L per person per day in hot weather, more if using the onboard shower.
• Waste: use dump points only; grey water on the ground can get you moved on or fined.
• Do not: assume a roadside rest area allows camping just because another van is already there.

The Nullarbor is sealed, wide and usually straightforward, but road trains change the mood. In Western Australia, combinations can run up to 53.5 m long. When one comes up behind you, hold your line, ease left only when safe, and let the professional driver do the passing. Do not wobble onto the shoulder like a frightened shopping trolley.

Between Caiguna and Balladonia you hit the famous 90 Mile Straight, about 146.6 km without a proper bend. It is a novelty for the first 20 minutes and a concentration test after that. Crosswinds can shove high-sided motorhomes around, especially near open saltbush country and the Bunda Cliffs turn-offs.

• Speed: sit at a calm 90 to 100 km/h if that suits your van, fuel use and conditions.
• Overtaking: leave huge room; road trains take much longer to pass than a ute and trailer.
• UHF: if your hire vehicle has one, Channel 40 is commonly used by truck drivers.
• Do not: pull onto soft shoulders or unsealed cliff tracks unless your hire agreement allows it.

There are two big rule moments on this run: entering South Australia from Victoria and entering Western Australia near Eucla. Quarantine restrictions can cover fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, honey and other produce. Eat it, cook it, bin it in the signed quarantine bins, or risk a fine that will ruin the mood faster than warm beer from the bottle-o.

Most campervan and motorhome hire agreements allow sealed public roads and restrict unsealed roads, beaches, station tracks and some national park access roads. That matters around the Bunda Cliffs and remote lookouts. Summer days can exceed 40°C on the Nullarbor, while winter nights can drop close to 0°C inland, so power, shade and water are not luxuries.

• Vehicle height: know your clearance; many vans sit around 2.7 to 3.4 m, and servo canopies are not decorative.
• Vehicle length: a 6 to 7.5 m motorhome needs more room at fuel bowsers and in caravan park sites.
• Pets: check national park and campground rules; many parks do not allow dogs.
• Book online: once your dates are firm, compare van sizes and check availability online before peak school holiday periods.
