Bendigo to Mildura campervan: the Mallee way north

The quickest sealed run via the Calder Highway and the Lake Tyrrell detour is about 455 km and around 5.5 to 6 hours of wheel time in a campervan. You can do it in a day, but that turns a good Mallee crossing into a servo receipt and a stiff neck.

Three days is the sweet spot for most first-timers: Bendigo or Bridgewater the first night, Sea Lake or Ouyen the second, then roll into Mildura with enough daylight to find your site, plug in, and not reverse into a gum tree while everyone watches.

• Fast transit: 1 long day, if you start early and keep fuel conservative.
• Better campervan pace: 3 days, with Lake Tyrrell at sunrise or sunset.
• Slow Mallee wander: 4–5 days, adding silo towns, river walks and a proper Mildura arrival.
• Best season: April to October; summer can sit over 38°C and the van fridge will work hard.

Leave Bendigo on the Calder side and the goldfields thin out quickly. By Inglewood and Wedderburn the road opens into grain country, then north of Wycheproof the sky gets bigger and the Mallee starts doing that trick where 40 km looks like 400.

The Lake Tyrrell detour via Sea Lake adds interest without needing a 4WD, provided you stay on sealed roads and formed access tracks. Do not drive onto the lakebed. It is fragile, boggy in places, and a very public way to become local entertainment.

• Bendigo to Bridgewater: short first hop with Loddon River breathing room.
• Bridgewater to Wycheproof: easy sealed highway, grain trucks in season.
• Wycheproof to Sea Lake: flat Mallee country and long sight lines.
• Sea Lake to Ouyen: 122 km with limited services between towns; fuel before you leave.
• Ouyen to Mildura: the final 107 km feels quick, but roos are common near dusk.

The hardest part of a bendigo to mildura motorhome road trip is often not the driving. It is deciding where you are legally allowed to sleep, where you can run power, and where the cassette gets dealt with before it becomes the third passenger.

Victoria is fairly friendly to RV travellers, but free camping is not a free-for-all. Use signed rest areas, council-approved RV stops or paid parks. In towns such as Charlton, Sea Lake, Ouyen and Mildura, check current signs for stay limits, generator hours and whether grey water must be contained.

• Powered comfort: Bendigo, Bridgewater, Ouyen and Mildura have caravan park options for battery recovery and air-con.
• Low-cost stops: Charlton and Sea Lake have traveller-style rest areas, but rules can change after floods, events or council works.
• Dump points: plan around Bendigo, Charlton, Sea Lake/Ouyen and Mildura; do not assume every small town has one open 24/7.
• Water: refill before leaving larger towns; never rely on a random tap at a closed oval.

In a hired motorhome, assume 10–15 L/100 km depending on size, wind, air-con and whether you packed like you are relocating. Most vans have plenty of range for this route, but Sunday trading and small-town opening hours are the trap.

The longest sensible no-fuss stretch on this version is Sea Lake to Ouyen at about 122 km, then Ouyen to Mildura at 107 km. That is not Outback scary, but it is far enough that running on the fuel light makes you look like someone who ignores tyre pressures too.

• Reliable fuel towns: Bendigo, Inglewood/Wedderburn, Charlton, Wycheproof, Sea Lake, Ouyen, Red Cliffs and Mildura.
• Top-up rule: if you are under half a tank at Sea Lake or Ouyen, fill it.
• Water rule: carry at least 10 L drinking water per person outside the van tank in hot months.
• Food rule: stock Bendigo, then use bakeries and small IGA-style shops rather than expecting a late-night supermarket.

This is a sealed 2WD route if you stick to the highways and town access roads. That matters, because many campervan hire agreements restrict unsealed driving except for short, maintained campground access. A tempting dirt shortcut can become an expensive little adventure.

You will share the Calder and Mallee roads with B-doubles, grain trucks and harvest traffic. They are not personal insults; they are working vehicles. Give them room, sit back from spray and stones, and only overtake when you can see a long, empty strip of Victoria in front of you.

• Watch the wind: open Mallee roads can shove a high-roof van around, especially at 90–100 km/h.
• Roos: dawn and dusk are the danger times, particularly north of Ouyen.
• Tyres: check pressures cold; heat and load punish soft tyres.
• Height: know your van height before servos, motel awnings and leafy caravan park entrances.
• Do not: take a 2WD rental camper onto Murray-Sunset National Park sand tracks unless your hire conditions specifically allow it.

Mildura is where the route changes mood: vineyards, paddle steamers, river gums and warm evenings that make a camp chair feel like advanced technology. Before you relax, do the unglamorous jobs first: fuel, dump point, water, groceries, then campsite.

If you are continuing the Big Lap north-west or east along the Murray, Mildura is a good reset town. Book a powered site if the forecast is hot, check availability online before peak school-holiday weeks, and give the batteries a proper night on mains before the next long leg.

• Good reset jobs: laundry, LPG swap or refill, supermarket, bottle-o, tyre check and dump point.
• River caution: camp only where signed; Murray flood levels can close low sites without much romance.
• Next routes: Wentworth, Mungo, Renmark or Swan Hill all need fresh fuel planning.
