Broome is a friendly place to start, but it is still the Kimberley: hot, spread out, and not the town for discovering at 4:40 pm that you forgot drinking water. Nearby national parks and conservation areas have their own rules. WA Parks campsites usually need to be booked online, pets are not allowed in national parks, generators may be restricted, and rubbish is your problem. Some Aboriginal land and Dampier Peninsula communities require bookings, permits or staying only at designated campgrounds.

• Minyirr Park: great for walking near Cable Beach, not a place to camp in your van.
• Danggu Geikie Gorge: about 20 km from Fitzroy Crossing; visit by day, camp in town or at approved nearby sites.
• Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek: spectacular, but access involves unsealed roads; many standard motorhome hire agreements do not allow them.
• Do: use official signage, WA Parks bookings and current shire advice over old forum gossip.
• Do not: assume 'self-contained' means you can camp anywhere. It only means your toilet, grey water and rubbish are not someone else's afternoon.

Broome is the easiest place on this side of the Kimberley to reset the van. Use it. After Broome, facilities thin out quickly and may be tied to caravan parks, roadhouses or council sites. A 100 km detour for a dump point is not character-building; it is poor planning with flies.

Public dump points and potable-water options around Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Port Hedland can change with maintenance and seasonal demand, so check a current camping app, visitor centre listing or shire page before you roll in. LPG bottle refills or swaps are usually found at larger servos and hardware outlets, but smaller roadhouses may have limited hours or no stock.

• Dump before distance: empty the cassette in Broome before heading to remote campgrounds.
• Carry extra water: in 30–34°C Dry Season weather, two people can burn through 25 litres faster than expected.
• Fuel range: keep at least a half tank once outside town. Roadhouses can run short, close early or have card-terminal tantrums.
• Do: keep a few gold coins and a backup water container for older facilities.
• Do not: rinse cassettes at drinking-water taps. That is how campground enemies are made.
