Fitzroy Crossing
A sensible first reset after Broome, with fuel, basic supplies and powered sites useful after a hot highway day.
Red dust in the mirrors, a road train doing its polite-but-firm thunder behind you, and the ocean getting further away than seems sensible: the Broome to Gold Coast drive is not a quick duck across town. It is roughly 4,700 km of sealed highway, big skies, hot servos, quiet rest areas and the occasional reminder that Australia was not designed by anyone with a small fuel tank.
This page is for self-drivers hiring a campervan or motorhome and sleeping in it, not people flitting between motels with a rental car. You will get the practical guts of a Broome to Gold Coast campervan route: sensible legs, fuel gaps, where to plan dump points and water, road-train manners, and how many days to allow before you check availability online and start pointing the cab east.
Fuel in Broome and again at Fitzroy Crossing; hot, open highway with road trains and wandering stock risk near dusk.
The Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek fuel gap is about 290 km; consider splitting at Halls Creek or Warmun.
Victoria Highway via Timber Creek and Victoria River; sealed, scenic and prone to Wet-season disruption.
A big Stuart Highway day; many campervan travellers break it around Mataranka, Daly Waters or Elliott.
Barkly Highway fuel planning matters: Tennant Creek to Barkly Homestead is 211 km, then 260 km to Camooweal.
Run through Cloncurry and Winton; fill regularly and expect long, straight sections with limited shade.
A long western Queensland haul via Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo and Mitchell; split it if the heat is up.
Warrego Highway to Toowoomba, then busier south-east Queensland roads; watch height limits near the coast.
The fastest sealed route runs Broome to Fitzroy Crossing, Kununurra, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Mount Isa, Longreach, Roma and into the Gold Coast. On paper it is about 4,700 km. In a campervan, with fuel, food, toilet stops, laundry, and the odd 53.5 metre road train to let past, plan on 12 to 14 days minimum. Three weeks is better if you want to arrive with a personality intact.
Most days below sit between 400 km and 690 km. That is deliberate: northern WA, the Barkly and western Queensland do not offer a cute village every 40 km. Start early, knock off before dusk, and do not plan to drive into cattle country at night unless you fancy meeting a bullock at headlight height.
Leaving Broome, the Great Northern Highway gives you a proper Kimberley send-off: red pindan, boabs, shimmering heat and not much shade. Broome to Fitzroy Crossing is about 396 km, then Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek is another 290 km before you continue towards Warmun and Kununurra. That 290 km stretch is one of the longest common fuel gaps on this run, so fill before you roll.
From Kununurra, the Victoria Highway crosses into the NT and runs 514 km to Katherine via Timber Creek and Victoria River. It is sealed and suitable for 2WD hire campers in normal conditions, but flooded creeks and road closures can still happen in the Wet. If your hire agreement says no unsealed roads, do not get clever with side tracks just because a bloke at the servo said it was fine last dry season.
Katherine to Tennant Creek is around 674 km via the Stuart Highway. Many drivers split it around Mataranka, Daly Waters or Elliott, especially if they want hot springs, a pub-style camp night, or just a shower that is not performed with one elbow against the sink. Tennant Creek to Mount Isa is another 661 km, with Barkly Homestead and Camooweal as key fuel points.
The Barkly is where distance becomes a mood. Tennant Creek to Barkly Homestead is about 211 km, then Barkly Homestead to Camooweal is about 260 km, then Camooweal to Mount Isa about 188 km. In a larger motorhome using 12 to 16 L/100 km, a headwind can turn a comfortable range into a maths lesson. Keep at least a third of a tank in reserve.
This Broome to Gold Coast motorhome road trip works best when you alternate holiday parks with basic overnighters. Powered sites let you run air-con, recharge properly, do laundry and reset the fridge. Free and low-cost rest areas can be handy between towns, but they are not a licence to set up a full verandah, light a fire wherever you like, or empty grey water into the spinifex like a goose.
Public dump points are commonly available in or near Broome, Kununurra, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Mount Isa, Longreach, Roma, Chinchilla and Toowoomba. Availability changes, so check a current dump-point app or council listing while you still have mobile service. Many towns also have potable-water taps at visitor centres, caravan parks or council facilities, but do not assume every roadside tap is drinking water.
From Mount Isa the route rolls through Cloncurry, Winton and Longreach, then south-east through Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo, Augathella, Mitchell, Roma, Dalby and Toowoomba. Longreach to Roma is a long 687 km day if done in one hit, so many self-drivers split it around Blackall, Tambo or Mitchell. By the time you hit the Warrego Highway, the country tightens up and the servos start appearing before you have finished the last coffee.
The Gold Coast is the opposite of the Barkly: more traffic, more roundabouts, more impatient hatchbacks, and many underground carparks signed at 2.1 m. Plenty of campervans are around 2.7 to 3.4 m high, so know your height before you chase a beachside parking bay. If you want a beach finish, book a holiday park or authorised campground ahead, especially during school holidays and long weekends.
