Babinda Rotary Park
A handy first-night option south of Cairns with basic facilities and a proper rainforest mood.
A road train in the mirror near Tully has a way of sharpening the mind. The Cairns to Sydney drive is sealed, scenic and absolutely doable in a 2WD motorhome, but it is not a lazy coastal dawdle unless you give it enough days.
This guide is for self-drivers sleeping in the van: powered sites, legal free camps, dump points, water fills, fuel gaps, wet-season quirks and the bits where your big-lap confidence gets tested by cane trucks, city tolls and a servo pie that has seen things.
Easy sealed run via Innisfail, Tully and Ingham; watch cane trucks and wet-season flooding.
Fuel at Townsville, Ayr, Bowen or Proserpine; Airlie sites book out in school holidays.
A big Bruce Highway day via Mackay and Sarina; keep fuel for the 199 km Sarina-Marlborough stretch.
Break it at Miriam Vale, Gin Gin or Bundaberg if you want a calmer day.
Use Gympie or the Sunshine Coast for supplies before Brisbane traffic and toll roads.
Short but busy; check height limits and legal overnight options before chasing beach parking.
Pacific Motorway cruising with good stops around Ballina, Grafton, Coffs Harbour and Nambucca.
Start early, expect motorway traffic near Newcastle and Sydney, and avoid inner-city parking stress.
The direct coastal run is roughly 2,420 km via the Bruce Highway, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, northern NSW and the Pacific Motorway. You can drive it in 6 long days if you treat the campervan like a delivery van, but 10 to 14 days is the sweet spot for normal humans who want beach swims, laundry, dump-point stops and the odd afternoon nap.
A good cairns to sydney motorhome road trip rhythm is 250 to 400 km on moving days, with a no-drive day around Airlie Beach, Hervey Bay or Coffs Harbour. North Queensland heat can sit around 30-34°C from November to March, and the wet season can close sections of the Bruce Highway after heavy rain.
Leaving Cairns, the highway rolls past banana farms, wet tropics hills and small towns that appear just as your coffee wears off. Useful fuel spacing is kind early on: Cairns to Innisfail is about 88 km, Innisfail to Tully 53 km, Tully to Ingham 145 km, then Ingham to Townsville 111 km.
This is still big-vehicle country. Expect cane trucks in season, B-doubles, and long straight sections where faster traffic will want to get around you. If a heavy vehicle sits behind you, hold your line, keep left where safe, and let it pass on overtaking lanes rather than drifting onto the shoulder like a startled wallaby.
Airlie Beach is where many self-drivers accidentally lose a day, and fair enough. When you do roll south again, the practical leg is Airlie Beach to Mackay at about 150 km, then Mackay to Rockhampton at roughly 336 km. The longest useful stretch is Sarina to Marlborough, about 199 km, so do not leave Mackay on fumes.
The Bruce Highway here can feel like a national endurance sport: roadworks, wide loads, caravans, mining traffic and the odd servo that looks like it was built before sunscreen. Keep a 300 km fuel buffer if your van is thirsty, especially late afternoon when smaller fuel stops may not be operating as you hoped.
From Rockhampton, the road starts to soften into smaller hops if you want it to. Rockhampton to Miriam Vale is about 170 km, Miriam Vale to Gin Gin 111 km, and Gin Gin to Hervey Bay around 120 km depending on your exact camp. This is a sensible place to pause for K'gari day tours, whale season from July to November, or simply a powered site and a proper shower.
Holiday parks on this corridor commonly sit around the $45-$80 per night mark for powered sites in peak periods, while Queensland national park campgrounds are usually cheaper but need booking online before you arrive. Some council and showground options are good value, but they are not all dump-point friendly, so check before your cassette reaches crisis level.
South of Brisbane the road changes character. It is still a highway, but now you are dealing with city traffic, toll roads, beach-town parking limits and more low-clearance surprises. Brisbane to Byron Bay is about 165 km, Byron to Port Macquarie about 397 km, and Port Macquarie to Sydney around 386 km.
Most high-roof campervans are roughly 2.7-3.3 m tall, and larger motorhomes can be longer than 7 m, so shopping-centre car parks and beachfront streets need a proper look before you commit. In Sydney, choose a holiday park or outer-suburb base with public transport rather than trying to wedge a motorhome near the harbour like a very expensive cork.
The unglamorous stuff decides whether this route feels easy or feral. On a Cairns to Sydney campervan run, plan a dump point every 2 to 3 days, refill fresh water whenever you are on a powered site, and carry drinking water separately in hot weather. A cassette toilet is not a magic portal; it has limits and consequences.
Free camping is allowed only where signs, council rules or campground listings say it is. Beachfront streets, boat ramps and picnic areas often look perfect at sunset, then less perfect when a ranger knocks in the morning. Fines vary by council and can be several hundred dollars, which is a steep price for a view and poor decision-making.
