That can be worth it for a longer Big Lap leg, but it adds the Bruce Highway, toll decisions and city traffic before you have even found the fridge switch.

If you fly into Sunshine Coast Airport at Marcoola, the first drive to Maroochydore is only about 10 km. That is a gentle shakedown: mirrors, turning circle, fuel cap side, LPG bottle location, and whether the cutlery drawer opens on roundabouts. For a calm first hour, aim north via the Sunshine Motorway toward Coolum and Noosa, or south-west via the Bruce Highway and Steve Irwin Way for the Glass House Mountains. • Fuel: fill before you head into the hinterland; towns are close by Australian standards, but range anxiety is a lousy travel companion.
• Road trains: rare on the coast, more common once you head inland or north; give them space and do not sit in blind spots.
• Tyres: check pressures after loading water, food and bags. A full water tank can add 80–120 kg.

The first night is not the time to prove you are a bush poet. Stay within 10–60 km of pickup, plug into power, level the van, test the hot water, work out the cassette toilet and find out which cupboard squeaks like a possum in a bin. Tomorrow you can be brave.

Beachfront holiday parks around Cotton Tree, Mooloolaba and Noosa are popular because they let you walk to food, the bottle-o and a sunrise swim without moving the van. They are also busy and often cost more than inland parks. If you want quieter, look at Boreen Point or the Glass House/Beerwah side, but book ahead and check whether your vehicle length fits the site.

• Do: arrive before 4 pm so you can park in daylight and ask about dump points and water taps.
• Don't: free camp in suburban beach carparks; Sunshine Coast Council can issue illegal-camping fines, often around the $300 mark.

Queensland is not a free-for-all, even when the view suggests otherwise. Dogs are not allowed in most national parks, generators may be restricted, and rangers do check.

In warm weather, two people can easily use 20–30 litres a day for drinking, cooking and quick rinses, more if you are sandy, salty or optimistic about showers. LPG refills or swaps are easiest in larger towns and at major servos; do not wait until a Sunday evening in a village where the bakery has shut and the magpies own the main street.

• Before leaving town: empty waste, fill fresh water, buy groceries and confirm your gas bottle level.
• Carry: a short drinking-water hose if supplied, toilet chemical, gloves and a torch for late arrivals.
• Heat note: summer days often sit around 28–32°C with humid storms; run the fridge on power overnight before loading it with seafood.

The Sunshine Coast is handy because you can make a proper little circuit without hammering out 700 km days. Keep the first loop short if this is your first time in a van; the hinterland roads are beautiful but can be narrow, steep and bendy enough to rearrange the pantry.

Northbound, Noosa and Rainbow Beach are sealed-road friendly, but K'gari access is not a casual motorhome detour. Inland, the Blackall Range gives you cooler nights, lookouts and bakeries that understand road-trip priorities. West and south-west, the Bunya Mountains and South Burnett feel like a different Queensland altogether: hoop pines, wineries, cattle country and fewer people asking where you parked.

• 3–4 days: Noosa, Eumundi, Boreen Point, Rainbow Beach and Gympie, about 310 km sealed-road touring.
• 4–5 days: Blackall Range, Kilcoy, Kingaroy, Bunya Mountains and back via the Bruce, roughly 520 km with hill driving.
