Hay
A sensible first night with fuel, groceries and dump-point options in town.
Red dust in the mirrors, a road train nosing up behind, and the next roadhouse still 180 km away: that is the honest middle of a Canberra to Albany drive. It is sealed road all the way, but it is not a casual dash across town for milk and a bottle-o stop.
This guide is for self-drivers hiring a campervan or motorhome and sleeping in it each night. You will get the practical bones of a canberra to albany campervan crossing: legs, realistic overnights, fuel gaps, dump points, quarantine traps, and where to slow down before the Nullarbor starts making decisions for you.
Go via Yass, Wagga Wagga and Narrandera; plenty of fuel, but it is a full first day.
A gentler Riverina leg through Balranald, useful for laundry, groceries and a powered night.
Cross fruit-fly zones near the SA border; Renmark and Burra are good breaks.
Last big-service town before the Nullarbor; fill fuel, water, pantry and patience.
Roadhouse country begins; allow time for WA quarantine at the border near Eucla.
The big Nullarbor push, including the 146.6 km 90 Mile Straight and long road-train sections.
Short, sealed run to the coast; restock, dump, refill and breathe sea air.
Via Ravensthorpe and Jerramungup; watch wildlife and avoid arriving in Albany after dark.
The shortest sensible version of this canberra to albany motorhome road trip is about 8 driving days. That gives you long but manageable legs and one proper Nullarbor day where you are alert enough to enjoy the big empty rather than just count white posts.
Ten to twelve days is much better. It lets you stop at Mildura, Ceduna, Esperance and perhaps Albany’s coast without turning every morning into a military exercise involving wet towels, half-packed chairs and someone asking where the coffee plunger went.
Do not plan big night drives. Kangaroos, emus and stock are most active around dawn and dusk, and a motorhome does not dodge like a hatchback.
The route starts politely enough: Canberra to Hay through Yass, Wagga Wagga and Narrandera, then west across the Riverina to Mildura. It feels civilised, with towns close enough that your fuel gauge does not become a family discussion.
After Mildura the distances stretch. The drive through Renmark, Burra and Port Augusta puts you into South Australia’s dry country, then Ceduna becomes your final proper supermarket-scale reset before the Nullarbor.
From Eucla to Norseman you cross the famous 90 Mile Straight between Caiguna and Balladonia. It is 146.6 km of dead-straight road, which sounds easy until the crosswind starts pushing your high-sided van around like a shopping trolley with opinions.
On the eastern half, fuel is frequent enough: Canberra to Hay is about 540 km but you pass major towns; Hay to Mildura is about 300 km; Mildura to Port Augusta is about 550 km with Renmark and Burra as useful breaks. Once you are west of Ceduna, plan by kilometres, not vibes.
Key Nullarbor fuel gaps include Ceduna to Penong at about 75 km, Nundroo to Nullarbor Roadhouse at about 144 km, Nullarbor Roadhouse to Border Village at about 184 km, Caiguna to Balladonia at about 181 km, and Balladonia to Norseman at about 191 km. None of those is outrageous, but a closed bowser, headwind or heavy van can make a 300 km fuel range feel silly.
If your hire motorhome has a cassette toilet, empty before long free-camp stretches. Grey nomads will forgive many sins; blocking the queue at a dump point because you ignored the red light is not one of them.
You can sleep legally in the van each night, but not just anywhere with a flat patch and a sunset. Councils, national parks and roadside rest areas all have their own rules, and ‘no camping’ signs are not decorative. Fines can land around the $300 mark in some council areas.
A good rhythm is powered site every second or third night, then legal low-cost or free camps between. Powered nights mean showers, laundry, battery top-ups and a chance to discover which cupboard has been rattling since Wagga.
For Albany and the south coast, book ahead in school holidays and summer. A campervan is freedom, yes, but it is nicer freedom when there is a legal place to park it before dark.
The main canberra to albany campervan route is sealed and suitable for standard 2WD campervans and motorhomes. The trouble usually starts when someone sees a dotted line to a beach, a cliff lookout or a ‘shortcut’ and decides the bond money was boring them anyway.
Road trains can run up to 53.5 metres long. When one is overtaking you, hold your line, ease off slightly if safe, and let the bow wave pass. When you overtake, you need a long, clear view; a motorhome loaded with water, groceries and two camp chairs is not a sports car.
Build your booking around the vehicle you actually need: enough beds, enough water capacity and enough luggage space that the aisle is not a nightly obstacle course. When the dates line up, check availability online and lock in the van before the best one becomes someone else’s Big Lap story.
This route crosses strict produce zones. Travelling west, you hit South Australian fruit-fly controls around the Riverland, and then the major Western Australia quarantine checkpoint at the border near Eucla. Fresh fruit, many vegetables, honey, plants and some other items can be restricted.
The practical move is simple: cook or eat fresh produce before the checkpoints, declare what you have, and do not try to hide a bag of mandarins under the doona. Inspectors have seen every trick, including the dumb ones.
It feels annoying until you remember WA’s agriculture and native bush are worth protecting. Also, nobody wants their first Western Australian memory to be a bin full of confiscated tomatoes.

A sensible first night with fuel, groceries and dump-point options in town.

Good reset stop for laundry, supplies and sorting produce before South Australian controls.

The smart pre-Nullarbor night: supermarket, fuel, water, dump point and an early start.
Check the camper, the dates and the price online, then book it — no quotes, no waiting around.
