Canberra to Kalgoorlie campervan route: the long way done properly

You can drive Canberra to Kalgoorlie in 6 or 7 days if you treat it like a delivery run and your idea of sightseeing is squinting at roadhouse menus. A better Canberra to Kalgoorlie motorhome road trip is 10 to 12 days, with one proper rest day around Ceduna, Eucla or Norseman.

The route below stays on sealed highways: Hume, Sturt, Calder/Sturt through the Riverland, then the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor and north from Norseman to Kalgoorlie. Most 2WD campervan hire agreements are happy on sealed roads; many are not happy on unsealed station tracks, beach access roads or the old Eyre Highway.

• Minimum: 6 nights if you are experienced and sharing the driving.
• Comfortable: 10 to 12 nights, especially in summer or school holidays.
• Do: plan a short first day if you pick up the van late.
• Do not: chase dirt-road shortcuts unless your hire conditions clearly allow it.

The first half of the trip feels civilised: Wagga, Hay, Mildura and Port Augusta all have proper servos, supermarkets and caravan parks. West of Ceduna, the towns shrink into roadhouses and the price of being disorganised goes up. Fuel can be noticeably dearer across the Nullarbor than in Canberra or Adelaide, so fill when it is sensible rather than when the warning light starts nagging.

The biggest practical gaps on the Eyre Highway are manageable in a standard campervan, but only if you do not skip fuel stops for sport. Ceduna to Penong is about 73 km, Penong to Nundroo about 82 km, Nundroo to Nullarbor Roadhouse about 143 km, Nullarbor to Border Village about 184 km, and Balladonia to Norseman about 191 km.

• Keep at least 250 to 300 km of usable fuel range in hand west of Ceduna.
• Top up water before the Nullarbor; roadhouse water may be limited or not for filling tanks.
• Expect road trains up to about 36.5 m on the Eyre Highway.
• If overtaking, wait for a long, empty view. If one is overtaking you, hold your line and ease off slightly.

This is a self-contained campervan route, not a sleep-anywhere fantasy. Free camping is common in parts of NSW, SA and WA, but it is controlled by signs, local council rules and common sense. If a rest area says no camping, it means no camping — not no camping unless you arrive after dark and look innocent.

Useful dump-point towns on this run include Hay, Mildura, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman and Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Check current locations in your camping app or council listings before you roll in, because dump points can move during roadworks or showground upgrades. Empty the cassette before the Nullarbor stretch; a full cassette and 40°C afternoon is a relationship test nobody needs.

• Powered sites: book ahead in Mildura, Port Augusta, Ceduna and Kalgoorlie during holidays.
• Free camps: arrive early, park level, keep awnings inside your footprint and take rubbish with you.
• National parks: camp only in designated sites, pay fees where required, and remember pets are usually not allowed.
• Water: refill potable tanks at caravan parks, visitor centres or signed public taps; never assume a roadhouse hose is drinkable.

The Nullarbor is not empty; it is just very good at making you feel small. The road is sealed, the horizon is enormous, and the wind can shove a high-roof motorhome around like a shopping trolley with one bad wheel. Slow down if crosswinds build, especially between Nullarbor Roadhouse, Eucla and Madura.

Before the WA border, use the quarantine bins. Western Australia is serious about fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds and honey. Eat it, bin it or declare it; do not hide half a mango in the fridge and act surprised when an inspector finds it.

• The 90 Mile Straight between Caiguna and Balladonia is 146.6 km of almost no steering input.
• Eucla sits in its own odd little time zone bubble for part of the year; check your phone and your campsite check-in time.
• Cliff lookouts near the Bunda Cliffs are spectacular, but stick to marked access tracks and sealed-approved roads.
• Do not park close to cliff edges. Limestone can undercut, and your insurance excess will not cover stupidity.

Norseman to Kalgoorlie is about 188 km on sealed highway, and it is tempting to treat it as the victory lap. Stay switched on: mining traffic, long vehicles and tired travellers all share this road. Kalgoorlie-Boulder has supermarkets, dump points, caravan parks, LPG swaps and enough red dust to make your floor mats look archaeological.

Once parked, visit the Super Pit lookout if conditions allow and check local road notes before heading towards any mining or station roads. Some tracks look harmless on a map and very expensive under a 2WD hire van. Book your campervan online with enough days to clean, refuel and return it properly rather than sprinting in at the last minute like a possum in headlights.

• Do: allow time for refuelling, cassette emptying and a proper interior clean.
• Do: check height clearance at older hotel car parks and shaded street bays.
• Do not: assume mining access roads are public tourist roads.
• Good final buffer: one spare night in Kalgoorlie if you have a flight or onward booking.
