Darwin to Coffs Harbour campervan route: Top End to the NSW coast

The Darwin to Coffs Harbour drive is roughly 3,880 km using the Stuart, Barkly, Landsborough, Warrego, New England and Gwydir highways. It is sealed all the way on the route below, which matters because most 2WD campervan hire agreements do not love unsealed shortcuts, station tracks or “it looked fine on the map” decisions.

Eight days is possible if you enjoy arriving cooked, cranky and still vibrating from the bitumen. Ten to fourteen days is the better motorhome pace, with a rest day at Katherine, Longreach or Coffs Harbour before everyone starts arguing over who left the fridge unlatched.

• Do: start early in the Top End and Barkly sections; 6 am beats 38°C and headwinds.
• Don’t: plan 700 km days back-to-back. Road trains, wildlife and fatigue are not brochure problems.
• Best easy season: May to September. October to April can mean 35–42°C inland and wet-season flooding near the Top End.

This is not the east coast where the next coffee appears every 12 minutes. The key fuel gap is Barkly Homestead to Camooweal, about 260 km, and Katherine to Daly Waters is about 276 km. Most modern hire motorhomes have enough range, but headwinds, air-con and a heavy right foot can turn maths into theatre.

Road trains on the Stuart and Barkly can be 53.5 m long. If one wants to pass, hold your line, ease off slightly and let it go. If you are overtaking, you need a very long, clear view; if in doubt, sit behind and admire the dust.

• Fuel rule: fill at half a tank once you leave Darwin, especially on weekends and public holidays.
• Range target: plan for at least 350–450 km between reliable fuel stops.
• Do: check opening hours at roadhouses before a late arrival.
• Don’t: rely on a single app listing; remote servos change hours, pumps and food availability.

Self-contained camping is part of the fun on a Darwin to Coffs Harbour motorhome road trip, but “free camp” does not mean “park anywhere near a nice tree”. Use signed rest areas, designated campgrounds, showgrounds, holiday parks and permitted council sites. In national parks, book where required and camp only in marked areas.

Powered sites are useful after hot days when the fridge has been working hard. Expect many holiday parks and roadhouse campgrounds to offer powered and unpowered options; in peak grey-nomad season, the popular inland stops can fill by late afternoon.

• Good rhythm: alternate free or low-cost stops with powered parks every 2–3 nights for laundry, showers and battery recovery.
• Dump points: plan around Katherine, Tennant Creek, Mount Isa, Longreach, Roma, Toowoomba and Coffs Harbour; verify access locally before you’re full.
• Do: carry drinking water separate from your tank, especially across the Barkly.
• Don’t: empty grey water on the ground unless a site explicitly allows it.

The run from Tennant Creek to Mount Isa is the classic wide-screen bit: big sky, spinifex, cattle grids, roadhouse coffee of varying courage and very little shade. Tennant Creek to Barkly Homestead is about 211 km, Barkly to Camooweal about 260 km, then Camooweal to Mount Isa about 188 km.

From Mount Isa, the road bends through Cloncurry, McKinlay and Kynuna towards Winton and Longreach. This is dinosaur and stock-route country, but it is also hot, open country where wind can push a high-top camper around. Keep both hands on the wheel and don’t chase the speed of local utes.

• Do: stop at Camooweal or Mount Isa if you are fading; fatigue creeps up quietly out here.
• Don’t: drive at dusk. Roos, cattle and wandering stock are a genuine vehicle-damage risk.
• Practical stop: Longreach is a good reset point for groceries, laundry, water and a proper powered night.

Longreach to Roma is about 692 km via Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo, Augathella and Mitchell. It is a big leg, so split it if you are travelling with kids, dogs, or anyone who becomes philosophical after 4 pm. Roma to Toowoomba is easier at about 350 km, with more regular towns and fuel.

The final push from Toowoomba to Coffs Harbour is around 535 km via Warwick, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Grafton and the coast. The Gwydir Highway down towards Grafton is sealed but steep and winding in sections. In a larger motorhome, use lower gears, don’t ride the brakes, and let faster traffic pass when safe.

• Do: give the Gibraltar Range descent time; it is not the place to discover your cupboards were badly packed.
• Don’t: arrive at Coffs Harbour after dark expecting easy beachside parking; book a site online in busy periods.
• Arrival job: dump, refill, restock and enjoy the harbour without red dust in your teeth.
