Can you sleep in a campervan at the Uluru sunset viewing area?
No. The sunset viewing areas are day-use areas inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and overnight camping or sleeping in a vehicle is not allowed. Drive back to your legal campsite at Yulara or another booked stop after sunset.
Is there free camping at Uluru?
Not at Uluru itself and not inside the national park. The nearest commonly used low-cost or free-style option is Curtin Springs, about 85 km east of Yulara, but conditions and site types can change, so check before relying on it.
Do I need a 4WD camper to visit Uluru?
No for the standard route. The Stuart Highway, Lasseter Highway and roads into Yulara, Uluru and Kata Tjuta are sealed and suitable for 2WD campervans and motorhomes. Avoid unsealed tracks unless your hire agreement specifically allows them.
Should I book a campsite before driving to Uluru?
Yes, especially from May to September and during school holidays. Yulara is remote, and turning up with a tired driver, a hot van and no site is a poor life choice. Check availability online before you commit to the long drive.

Pets are generally not allowed inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, except approved assistance animals. If you are travelling with a dog, confirm pet rules with your campground before booking and plan for someone to stay outside the park with the animal.
Where do I empty the toilet cassette near Uluru?
Use designated dump points at your campground or confirmed public facilities. Do not dump toilet waste or grey water in the national park, at rest areas or beside the road; it is illegal, filthy, and a quick way to make every other van traveller look bad.
