It depends on season, distance and how you camp. A campervan combines transport and bed, but you still pay for fuel, campsites, LPG and insurance options. It often wins when you use a mix of holiday parks, national park campgrounds and legal free camps rather than powered sites every night.

Shoulder seasons are often kinder: May, early June, September and October can be good depending on the region. The north is popular in the dry season from about May to September, while coastal areas surge over Christmas, Easter and school holidays. Always check availability online for your exact dates.

Not always, but it changes where you can comfortably stay. A self-contained motorhome is handy for low-service camps and long inland stretches, while smaller vans suit travellers happy to use holiday park or public facilities. Some councils and camps require self-contained vehicles, so check the rules before you rely on free camping.
