There is no single terrifying 600 km no-fuel gap on the sealed route, but that does not mean you should cruise along on fumes like a hero in thongs. Useful gaps include Wudinna to Ceduna at about 203 km, Nullarbor Roadhouse to Border Village at about 184 km, Caiguna to Balladonia at about 182 km, and Balladonia to Norseman at about 191 km.

Roadhouse fuel can be 20–50 cents per litre dearer than big towns, sometimes more during supply wobbles. That is the price of having diesel and unleaded waiting in the middle of a very large nowhere. Treat half a tank as your new empty once you leave Ceduna.

• Nullarbor rule: top up at roadhouses even if you only need 25 litres.
• Range target: a comfortable 450–500 km touring range is sensible for most hired campervans.
• Don’t: rely on late-night fuel everywhere; some roadhouses change hours seasonally.

If one comes towards you on a narrow section, keep left but do not drop the van onto a soft shoulder.

Summer can push 35–45°C across the Nullarbor and Goldfields. Winter nights can drop close to 0°C around Norseman and Kalgoorlie. The wet is less of an issue here than in the Top End, but wind, heat and sudden storms still make a high-sided motorhome feel very nautical.

• Tyres: check pressures cold every few days, especially before Port Augusta and Ceduna.
• Wildlife: avoid dawn, dusk and night driving west of Port Augusta.
• Dirt roads: check your hire conditions before any unsealed lookout, beach track or mine-road detour.
• Do: carry drinking water in the cabin, not just in the van tank.

Kalgoorlie is not a soft landing, and that is the point. The Super Pit, gold-rush streets, big skies and work boots at the pub remind you that the west is built on distance. Before you celebrate, find your caravan park or legal RV stop, plug in, dump the cassette and get the dust out of the door seals.

If you are booking one-way, check availability online early because long-distance campervan relocations across state lines are not endless. If you are looping back east, give yourself recovery days; the Nullarbor feels shorter only to people who have forgotten it properly.
