Gold Coast to Alice Springs campervan route, the sensible sealed way

The practical gold coast to alice springs drive heads inland over the range to Roma, then west through Charleville, Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Camooweal before crossing the Barkly to Tennant Creek and dropping south on the Stuart Highway. It is roughly 3,090 km, depending on where you collect the van and where you overnight.

Could you draw a straighter line through Birdsville, the Plenty Highway or the Sandover? Yes. Should you do it in a standard hired campervan? Almost certainly no. Many rental agreements exclude unsealed roads except short, approved access tracks, and out here a shortcut can become an insurance problem before the kettle boils.

• Best for: 2WD campervans and motorhomes on a one-way Red Centre run.
• Minimum time: 7 days if you are focused; 9 to 10 days if you want to see anything beyond fuel bowsers.

The first day is less romantic than the Red Centre brochures suggest: Gold Coast traffic, the climb through Toowoomba, then a long haul on the Warrego Highway to Roma. It is about 480 km and 5 hr 40 min before meal stops, bakery detours and the inevitable first-night faff with the awning.

Roma is a good shakedown stop because it has supermarkets, servos, LPG bottle swaps, dump point options and powered sites. If you are new to sleeping in a van, this is where you learn which cupboard rattles, how fast the fridge eats battery, and why grey nomads always seem to own more pegs than Bunnings.

• Fuel: fill at the Gold Coast or Toowoomba, then Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles and Roma all give sensible options.
• Water: top up in town before heading west; do not assume every free camp has potable taps.
• Do: book a powered site for night one if you are new to the van.
• Do not: push past Roma tired. Dusk west of Miles is prime roo time.

Roma to Charleville is an easy 266 km day, which is useful after the first big push. Charleville gives you a classic outback reset: fuel, groceries, laundries, town camping and wide streets built by people who clearly expected everyone to tow half a house.

The next worthwhile haul is Charleville to Longreach, about 515 km via Augathella and Barcaldine. It is sealed, open and deceptively tiring. You can sit on a legal speed all day and still feel like the horizon has a personal grudge against you.

• Fuel checks: Charleville to Augathella is about 84 km; Augathella to Barcaldine is about 320 km; Barcaldine to Longreach is about 107 km.
• Camp style: powered parks in Charleville and Longreach are handy for air-con, washing and battery recovery.
• Do: keep at least half a tank once you leave Roma; servos can close early or run short after local events.
• Do not: park under big river gums in wind. Shade is lovely until it becomes a branch.

Longreach to Cloncurry is about 536 km through Winton, Kynuna and McKinlay. This is where the gold coast to alice springs motorhome road trip starts feeling properly inland: low scrub, big sky, mirages and the occasional road train appearing in the mirrors like a block of flats with headlights.

Road trains can legally run up to 53.5 m in parts of Australia. If one is overtaking you, hold your speed or ease off slightly when safe, keep left, and do not drift onto the gravel shoulder unless you enjoy replacing tyres in 38°C heat.

• Fuel gaps: Longreach to Winton is about 180 km; Winton to Kynuna about 164 km; McKinlay to Cloncurry about 227 km.
• Break points: Winton is the obvious meal and fuel stop; Kynuna and McKinlay are smaller but useful.
• Do: secure cupboard doors and fridge latches before the day starts; crosswinds and road-train wash test everything.
• Do not: overtake a road train unless you can see a very long, empty stretch. If in doubt, make a cuppa later and stay alive now.

From Cloncurry, run through Mount Isa to Camooweal, about 310 km. Mount Isa is the last big-service town before the NT crossing, so this is the place for groceries, fuel, water, pharmacy jobs and any tyre-pressure paranoia you have been saving up.

Camooweal to Tennant Creek is about 478 km via Barkly Homestead and Threeways. The key number is Camooweal to Barkly Homestead: roughly 260 km with no fuel in between. It is sealed, but that does not make it suburban. Heat shimmer, cattle, caravans and road trains all share the same strip of bitumen.

• Fuel: top up in Mount Isa or Camooweal; then Barkly Homestead; then Threeways or Tennant Creek.
• Border note: check current biosecurity rules for fruit, plants and honey before crossing state and territory lines.
• Do: carry drinking water separate from the van tank; 10 litres per person spare is not silly out here.
• Do not: drive this leg at night. Cattle and roos do not read your rental excess conditions.

Tennant Creek to Alice Springs is about 508 km down the Stuart Highway. It is one of those days where the map looks simple and the country keeps changing quietly: granite, spinifex, roadhouses, long flats and the first sense that the MacDonnell Ranges are not far off.

Dump points are generally available in larger towns along this route, including Roma, Charleville, Longreach, Winton, Mount Isa, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, though access and fees can change. Use a current dump-point app or council listing before you roll in with a full cassette and high expectations.

• Final fuel spacing: Tennant Creek to Wauchope is about 114 km; Wauchope to Barrow Creek about 186 km; Barrow Creek to Ti Tree about 91 km; Ti Tree to Alice about 193 km.
• Free camping: obey time limits, keep grey water contained where required, and leave no rubbish. A free camp is not a tip with stars.
• National parks: Queensland and NT park camps usually need online booking before arrival; fees and rules vary by park.
• Do: book Alice Springs camping ahead in peak season, then check availability online for your return or onward campervan plan.
