The plain gold coast to brisbane drive is short by Australian standards: roughly 80 km from Surfers Paradise to Brisbane CBD, usually 1 hr 15 to 1 hr 45 outside peak. But on a Friday afternoon, the M1 can turn into a slow-moving caravan of utes, tradies, B-doubles and people who have forgotten indicators exist.

Fuel up before you climb. Nerang to Springbrook is about 30 to 35 km depending on your start point, but there is no big servo waiting at the national park. • Water: fill potable tanks before leaving the coast or at your holiday park tap.

• Do not: take side tracks that turn to dirt unless your hire agreement specifically allows it. Most standard campervans are sealed-road only.

Tamborine Mountain is close on the map and slower in real life. Expect roughly 55 to 60 km from Springbrook via Nerang and Oxenford, with climbs, tight village streets and weekend traffic that behaves as if every fudge shop is an emergency service.

For motorhomes, the trick is to park once and walk. Gallery Walk and the lookout areas can be tight for anything over 6 metres, and reversing a long van while a queue of hatchbacks judges you is character-building in the wrong way.

• Fuel: Nerang, Oxenford and Pimpama are your easiest servo bets before or after the mountain.
• LPG swap: larger servos and hardware-style outlets around Oxenford and Beenleigh are more reliable than small village shops.
• Do: arrive early, park legally, and keep your rear overhang out of traffic.

Drop off the mountain towards the northern Gold Coast and steer for Jacobs Well. It is only about 45 to 55 km from Tamborine, but it feels like the city has exhaled: flat cane country, boat ramps, pelicans, mozzies with ambition, and locals launching tinnies before breakfast.

This is a useful campervan pause because you are still near the M1 if weather turns, but far enough away to stop feeling like you are camping in a shopping centre. Holiday parks around here are the sensible choice for powered sites, showers, water top-ups and cassette dump access.

• Longest fuel gap on this route: about 60 to 70 km if you wander between Springbrook, Tamborine and the bay without topping up.
• Waste: empty the cassette at a signed dump point only, usually at holiday parks or listed public facilities. Never into toilets, stormwater drains or bushland.
• Do not: underestimate summer insects; screens shut by dusk, lights low, sanity preserved.

From Jacobs Well to Cleveland or Redland Bay is about 60 to 70 km depending on the route. This leg gives you mangroves, island glimpses and easier van days than central Brisbane. Passenger ferries run to the bay islands, but do not assume you can take a hire motorhome across; vehicle ferry rules, length limits and hire permissions need checking before you commit.

The final run from Manly or Wynnum into Brisbane is short, around 20 km to the CBD, but it is where new drivers get caught by toll roads, bus lanes, clearways and low urban parking. Know your vehicle height; many campervans sit around 2.6 to 3.2 m, and some motorhomes are higher.

• Tolls: Gateway, Logan, Clem7 and other Brisbane toll roads need electronic payment arrangements; check your hire terms before driving through.
• Traffic: avoid 7.00 to 9.00 am inbound and 3.30 to 6.00 pm outbound if you value your clutch leg.
• Do: book a final Brisbane holiday park or depot-adjacent night if you have an early drop-off. Rushing a dump, refuel and return inspection is how small mistakes get expensive.
