Gold Coast to Kalgoorlie campervan route: the long sealed way west

The direct sealed run is about 3,800 km depending on your exact depot and campground choices. You can technically do it in six very long driving days, but that is how arguments start over reversing into powered sites. A better Gold Coast to Kalgoorlie motorhome road trip is 8 to 10 days, with at least one non-driving afternoon in Broken Hill, Ceduna or Norseman.

The route below stays on sealed highways: Cunningham/Warrego country out of Queensland, the dry western edge of NSW, the Barrier Highway into South Australia, then the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor and north to Kalgoorlie. It is big-lap territory, but you do not need a 4WD if you behave yourself and keep to the bitumen.

• Minimum sensible time: 7 days if you are experienced and sharing driving.
• Comfortable time: 9 to 10 days with proper shopping, laundry and dump-point stops.
• Daily target: 350 to 550 km; less if it is 40°C or windy.
• Do: book the first and last nights online before you roll.
• Do not: plan a 700 km day then expect to enjoy cooking pasta in a van at dusk.

Fuel is available often enough for normal 2WD campervans and motorhomes, but you must treat every roadhouse as useful, not optional. Prices across the Nullarbor can sit well above city rates, and opening hours are not the place to test your optimism.

The longest common sealed-road fuel gaps on this route are around 184 to 192 km on the Eyre Highway: Nullarbor Roadhouse to Border Village is about 184 km, Caiguna to Balladonia about 182 km, and Balladonia to Norseman about 192 km. That is not Cape York, but headwinds can add 10–20% to fuel use in a high-sided camper.

• Fill before the desert: Ceduna, then top up at Penong, Nundroo or Nullarbor if your gauge is dropping fast.
• Plan range: aim to keep at least 250 km of usable range in reserve.
• Carry water: 10–20 litres drinking water per person beyond the tank is sensible.
• Do: refuel in the morning when roadhouses are open and you are not tired.
• Do not: assume mobile reception will save a bad fuel calculation.

Sleeping in the van is the whole point, but it does not mean pulling into any pretty patch of gravel. Free camping is legal in many places along this line, yet each council and national park has its own rules. If a sign says no overnight camping, that includes charming couples in clean motorhomes with matching camp chairs.

Powered sites are handy every few nights for air-con, battery recovery, hot showers and laundry. Public dump points are commonly found in larger towns such as Goondiwindi, Bourke, Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman and Kalgoorlie-Boulder, but check the latest listing before arrival because access and water taps change.

• Good rhythm: powered site every second or third night; free or low-cost camp between.
• Toilet rule: use dump points only, never roadside drains, bushland or campground toilets.
• Water: ask before filling tanks; some Nullarbor stops limit potable water.
• National parks: camp only in designated areas and pay required fees online where applicable.
• Do: arrive before dark; kangaroos and caravan reversing both get worse after sunset.

Road trains west of Bourke and across the Nullarbor can be up to 53.5 metres long. They are not trying to bully you; they are just physics with headlights. If one sits behind you, keep steady, indicate clearly, and let it pass on a long straight when safe. Do not drift onto a soft shoulder unless you can see it is firm and sealed.

Most hired 2WD campervans are restricted to sealed roads, with only short, approved gravel access to recognised campgrounds. That means no heroic shortcuts across the Great Central Road, no casual desert tracks, and no “Google says it saves two hours” nonsense. The all-sealed Gold Coast to Kalgoorlie drive is longer but far more rental-friendly.

• Overtaking: allow at least 1 km clear vision for road trains; more if towing or in wind.
• Tyres: check pressures cold every few days; heat and load punish soft tyres.
• Wildlife: avoid dawn, dusk and night driving, especially west of Cobar and on the Eyre Highway.
• Wind: slow down when passing trucks; the bow wave can shove a tall motorhome sideways.
• Do not: leave the bitumen without checking your hire conditions first.

Summer on this route is serious. Inland NSW, South Australia and the Nullarbor can push 35–45°C, and a van parked in full sun becomes a metal lunchbox. Winter is easier for driving, though nights can drop below 5°C around Broken Hill, the Nullarbor and Kalgoorlie.

Before crossing into Western Australia, eat or bin restricted fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and some seeds. The WA quarantine checkpoint is not theatre; they will inspect vans, fridges and storage tubs. Plan your big grocery shop for after the border if you are carrying fresh produce.
