Holiday parks Shark Bay: where campervans actually fit

Shark Bay sits on Western Australia’s Coral Coast, about 830 km north of Perth by road. It is not a casual after-lunch detour unless your idea of a short drive includes two roadhouses, three podcasts and a sandwich of unknown age.

The key move is turning west off the North West Coastal Highway at the Overlander Roadhouse. From there it is roughly 128 km of sealed road to Denham, the main campervan base. Fuel is available at the highway and in Denham, but do not pass a servo with less than a quarter tank and a brave grin.

• Do: top up at Geraldton, Northampton, Billabong or Overlander depending on your route and tank size.
• Do: allow extra time for headwinds; a high-roof van can drink more than expected on open country.
• Don’t: plan to arrive after dark if it is your first night in a hired motorhome. Roos and wandering stock are not impressed by your itinerary.

The road into Denham is sealed and suitable for 2WD campervans and larger motorhomes. The scenery is classic WA understatement: flat scrub, saltbush, sudden turquoise water, then a bay that looks like someone turned the saturation up.

Most holiday parks Shark Bay visitors use are around Denham or Monkey Mia. Denham is the practical base: supermarket, bottle-o, fuel, fish-and-chip options, foreshore parking and a more normal town rhythm. Monkey Mia is about 26 km away and puts you closest to the famous dolphin experience, but you will pay in convenience because it is more of a resort-style pocket.

If a directory has told you there is a shark bay top 10 holiday park, check what you actually need before falling in love with the ranking. A couple in a compact camper may only need an unpowered patch and hot showers. A six-berth motorhome needs length clearance, turning room, a dump point plan and a powered site if the air-con is going to run legally.

• Denham: best for supplies, foreshore walks, day trips to Shell Beach and Eagle Bluff.
• Monkey Mia: best for early dolphin viewing and beachside resort facilities.
• Hamelin/Overlander area: useful first or last night if you are breaking up the long haul.

For most self-drivers, Denham gives the best balance. Park up for two or three nights, unclip the table, and use the van as a base instead of repacking every morning like a travelling circus.

Camping Shark Bay is straightforward if you book a proper site and respect the signs. Holiday parks around Denham and Monkey Mia generally offer powered and unpowered sites, camp kitchens, laundries, showers and water taps. In peak grey-nomad season from about May to September, the good powered sites can disappear quickly.

Dump points are available in Denham and at some holiday parks, but access can change, so confirm when you check in. If your van has a cassette toilet, do not leave the job until the morning you drive 330 km to Carnarvon. That is how marriages are tested.

• Powered site: best for air-con, charging, microwave use and longer stays.
• Unpowered site: fine for compact vans with solar, especially in cooler months.
• Water: fill when offered; Shark Bay is dry country and potable taps are not something to assume.
• LPG: plan refills in larger towns rather than betting on every small stop having what you need.

Book or check availability online before you commit to the detour west. Turning up late in July and hoping for a waterfront powered site is less a plan and more a character-building exercise.

The best things to do near Shark Bay are spread out enough that having your bed on wheels is genuinely useful. From Denham, you can reach Monkey Mia in about 25 minutes, Eagle Bluff in about 15–20 minutes, Shell Beach in about 35–40 minutes and Hamelin Pool in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes.

Shell Beach is the one that surprises people: not sand, but billions of tiny white shells stacked metres deep in places. Eagle Bluff gives you the big lookout moment over seagrass shallows where rays, sharks and dugongs may cruise below. Monkey Mia is the well-known dolphin stop, but go early and read the rules rather than wandering down with a takeaway coffee and main-character energy.

• Monkey Mia: dolphin viewing area, beach walks and calm-water paddling conditions when the wind behaves.
• Shell Beach: easy sealed-road stop with parking suitable for most campervans.
• Eagle Bluff: short boardwalk and lookout; watch children in wind gusts.
• Ocean Park Aquarium: guided marine tours south of Denham, handy if the weather turns scruffy.
• Little Lagoon: pretty picnic stop near Denham; check local parking and no-camping signs.

Do not treat day-use areas as sneaky overnight camps. Rangers know the difference between a sunset photo and someone boiling pasta with the curtains drawn.

Francois Peron National Park is the big red-dirt temptation north of Denham. Peron Homestead is accessible on sealed and firm tracks, but beyond the homestead the park becomes high-clearance 4WD sand country. Most standard campervan and motorhome hire agreements do not allow it, and bogging a 2WD rental in soft sand is an expensive way to meet a ranger.

WA national park entry fees apply unless you have a valid pass; allow around $17 per vehicle for a day visit, but check current pricing before you go. The heat can be severe in summer, often over 35°C, and there is limited shade once you are away from town facilities.

• Do: visit Peron Homestead if conditions and your hire terms allow.
• Do: carry more drinking water than you think you need — at least 3–4 litres per person for a warm day out.
• Don’t: drive hire motorhomes past 4WD-only signs or onto beaches.
• Don’t: camp inside national park areas unless you are in an approved campground with the right vehicle and booking.

If you want the deeper 4WD sections, book a local tour or choose a permitted 4WD camper from the start. A two-wheel-drive motorhome is a comfortable home, not a dune buggy in a hat.

Two nights is the minimum that makes the detour worthwhile. Three nights feels sane. Four gives you time for wind, washing, a slow foreshore dinner and one day where nobody has to announce the next departure time.

The sweet spot for weather is usually April to October, with many days in the low-to-high 20s°C and cooler nights. Summer can be hot, exposed and windy, while winter school holidays and the main grey-nomad migration can tighten availability at popular holiday parks.

• Fast lap: 2 nights in Denham, Monkey Mia early morning, Shell Beach on the way out.
• Comfortable stay: 3 nights with Eagle Bluff, Little Lagoon and a lazy town day.
• Slow traveller: 4–5 nights, adding Hamelin Pool, Ocean Park and weather-flex days.

Once your dates are set, check campervan availability online and match the vehicle to the sites you want. A compact van is easier around small coastal car parks; a larger motorhome is better if you value an internal shower, toilet and a bit of living room when the wind arrives sideways.
