Your mackay to cairns campervan run, minus the guesswork

The direct Mackay to Cairns drive is about 735 km on the Bruce Highway. In a campervan, with fuel, food, water and the occasional stop to stare at a paddock full of cane bins, call it 9 to 10 hours of wheel-turning. That does not make it a sensible one-day haul.

Four to six days is the sweet spot. You can do it in three if you are relocating a van and immune to joy, but most self-drivers are better off sleeping near Airlie Beach or Bowen, then Townsville or Rollingstone, then Cardwell or Mission Beach before rolling into Cairns.

• Quick but sane: 3 nights, big driving days, limited detours.
• Comfortable: 5 nights, beach camps, reef/island day options and time to do laundry.
• Slow tropical: 7 nights, Mission Beach, waterfalls and a proper Cairns arrival buffer.
• Do not: plan a late Cairns return after driving from Townsville in one hit during the wet.

Leave Mackay with diesel, water and snacks sorted; the first 150 km to Proserpine and Airlie Beach is easy sealed highway, but caravans, cane trucks and roadworks can pull the average speed down. The Whitsunday turn-off is worth it if you want a beachy first night rather than pushing hard to Bowen.

North of Bowen the country opens up. Ayr is a useful servo-and-supermarket stop before Townsville, while the Townsville to Cardwell stretch is where fatigue sneaks in because the road looks simple and the distances are not. Cardwell to Mission Beach is short on paper, but you will slow for rainforest, villages and the usual tropical-road surprises.

• Longest sensible fuel gap: keep the tank comfortable between major towns; Bowen to Townsville is about 200 km.
• Best lunch pull-up: Bowen, Ayr, Cardwell foreshore or Tully if you want shade and supplies.
• Watch for: B-doubles, wide loads, cane trains near crossings and tired holiday traffic on Fridays.
• Do: arrive at camps before dark; reversing a motorhome under palm trees by torchlight is character-building in the worst way.

This mackay to cairns motorhome road trip is easy if you mix holiday parks with a few legal low-cost stops. Powered sites around Airlie Beach, Bowen, Townsville, Cardwell, Mission Beach and Cairns give you showers, laundry, mains power and a civilised reset from 30°C heat.

Free camping exists, but it is not a magical right granted by owning a camp chair. Local councils set the rules, signs change, and some beachside areas are day-use only. If the sign says no overnight camping, believe it; fines can run into a few hundred dollars and rangers do check the obvious spots.

• National parks: Queensland Parks camping is usually booked online before arrival; basic sites are commonly around $7.25 per person per night.
• Self-contained means: onboard toilet or cassette, grey-water control where required, and no sneaky sink bucket under the van.
• Powered-site rhythm: plug in every second or third night to cool the fridge, charge gear and run the air-con legally.
• Do not: camp on boat ramps, dunes, foreshore lawns or anywhere crocodile warning signs are trying to be helpful.

The coast is well set up for motorhomes, but do the boring chores before you are desperate. Public dump points are commonly found around Mackay, the Whitsunday/Proserpine area, Bowen, Townsville, Ingham/Cardwell, Innisfail and the Cairns region. Confirm the exact site and access in your camping app or council listing before you count on it.

Fresh water is usually easiest at holiday parks, selected visitor centres, some showgrounds and marked potable taps. Do not assume every tap is drinking water, and do not block a dump point while you reorganise the entire contents of your van like a roadside garage sale.

• Cassette rule: empty when half to two-thirds full in hot weather; tropical heat is not forgiving.
• Grey water: use signed disposal points or approved drains at parks; never dump onto foreshore grass.
• LPG: swap-and-go bottles are common at servos and hardware outlets in larger towns; check bottle type before leaving Mackay.
• Water buffer: carry at least 20 litres spare drinking water, more if free camping.

The Bruce Highway is sealed and suitable for 2WD campervans and motorhomes, but it is not a city motorway. Expect road trains and B-doubles, especially near ports, farms and roadwork zones. Give them room, do not sit beside them, and if one is on your tail, use a safe pull-off rather than trying to win a physics argument.

From about December to April, the wet can change the plan fast. Low sections near Proserpine, Ayr, Ingham, Tully and Innisfail can flood or close after heavy rain. In the dry, June to October is easier driving, but book camps early around school holidays and Cairns peak season.

• Camper height: know your hired vehicle height before entering car parks, servos and covered dump-point bays; many vans sit around 2.7 to 3.4 m.
• Fuel use: a typical campervan may use roughly 12 to 15 L/100 km, more with air-con, headwinds and hills.
• Dirt-road note: avoid unsealed short-cuts unless your hire agreement allows them; many standard motorhome hires exclude dirt, beaches and 4WD tracks.
• Heat: summer days often sit around 30 to 34°C with high humidity; shade is not a luxury, it is trip infrastructure.

You do not need to turn the route into a military campaign, but a few detours make the coast feel like a trip rather than a transfer. Airlie Beach adds Whitsunday energy, Bowen has beaches with proper camper-friendly pacing, and Mission Beach gives you rainforest-meets-sea without the Cairns parking circus.

Keep the van practical. Big motorhomes are happier in holiday-park bays and sealed lookouts than tight waterfall car parks. If you want to add Eungella, Paluma Range or the Atherton Tablelands, check gradients, road width, weather and your vehicle conditions first.

• Easy add-on: Airlie Beach, 25 km off the Bruce Highway from Proserpine.
• Good slow stop: Bowen beaches, with town supplies close by.
• Wildlife caution: Mission Beach is cassowary country; slow down and do not feed wildlife.
