FIRST NIGHT SORTED

Maui campervan hire Cairns Airport: land, load up, sleep easy

The hardest part is not getting the keys — it is deciding where to sleep that first night, while your brain is still somewhere over the Coral Sea and the van fridge has exactly zero cheese in it.

The drive, broken down

  1. Cairns Airport terminal to depot5–8 km · 10–20 min

Use the confirmed shuttle, taxi or rideshare plan; do not try to walk it in tropical heat.

  2. Depot to Cairns or Smithfield supplies5–12 km · 10–20 min

Fuel up, buy groceries, grab insect repellent and learn where the van height sticker is.

  3. Supplies to Lake Placid first night8–15 km · 15–25 min

A calm powered-site option if you are heading north or west the next morning.

  4. Morning roll-out to Captain Cook Highway20–70 km · 30–75 min

Take the coast road north slowly; it is scenic, bendy and not the place to race a road train.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Questions self-drivers actually ask

Is Maui campervan hire Cairns Airport actually at the terminal?
Usually no; airport hire generally means you fly into Cairns, then transfer a short distance to the depot area. Check your confirmed pickup instructions online before arrival so you know whether to use a shuttle, taxi or rideshare.
Can I collect the van and drive straight to the Daintree?
You can if you collect early and keep the day sensible, but it is a lot for arrival day. Cairns to the Daintree River area is around 105–115 km, plus stops, ferry timing and campground check-in. A nearby first night is calmer.
Can I free camp around Cairns on the first night?
Only where overnight camping is clearly permitted. Airport car parks, beaches, boat ramps and suburban streets are not a clever plan, and fines can be expensive. Use a powered site if you are tired or still learning the van.
Are Maui motorhomes allowed on the Bloomfield Track or Cape York roads?
Do not assume so. Many 2WD rental campervans and motorhomes are restricted to sealed roads or approved roads only, which usually rules out rough 4WD tracks such as Bloomfield Track, CREB Track and many Cape York sections. Read the rental conditions before booking your route.
Where should I buy groceries and fuel after pickup?
Cairns, Smithfield and the southern suburbs have supermarkets, servos, chemists and bottle-os. Top up fuel before leaving town, especially if heading inland or north, because distances stretch quickly once the city disappears.
When is the best season to start a Cairns campervan trip?
May to October is drier and popular, so book campsites early. November to April is hotter, wetter and quieter, with better campsite availability but higher flood, cyclone and humidity considerations. Always check road closures in the wet.
