Namadgi National Park is the tempting one: big granite country, snow gums, roos at dusk and proper cold nights. Camp only in designated campgrounds, follow fire bans, take rubbish out, and leave pets behind. Generators are usually unwelcome in quiet bush settings, even when technically allowed at some broader campgrounds.

• Do: check ACT Parks alerts before heading into Namadgi; storms, fires and roadworks can close areas fast.
• Don't: assume a lay-by is legal because another van is there. That other van may simply be first in line for a fine.

Fill fuel before you leave the city. Canberra to Batemans Bay is about 150 km via the Kings Highway, Canberra to Cooma is about 115 km, and Canberra to Jindabyne is about 180 km. Keep the first loop modest, drive in daylight, and use lower gears on long descents. On Clyde Mountain and in the Snowy Mountains, do not ride the brakes. Pull over where safe and let faster traffic go; grey nomads will respect you more, and so will your brake pads.

• Coast loop: Kings Highway to Batemans Bay, then north or south along the coast before looping back via Cooma or Braidwood.
