Mackay's campervan pickup scene is usually tied to the airport side of town and the Paget/South Mackay industrial belt rather than a postcard waterfront counter. The airport is only a short hop from the city, but your first hour still matters. The Bruce Highway, Peak Downs Highway and harbour roads carry B-doubles, mining traffic and cane trucks during the crush season, roughly June to November. Southbound, Sarina is about 36 km away and makes a useful shakedown stop if the first day has already become a circus.

The romantic option is always a beach, obviously. The practical option is a booked site with a tap, toilets and enough daylight to find the handbrake. Around Mackay, the best first-night choices are close enough that you can turn around if the van, weather or driver confidence is not behaving.

Queensland national-park camping must be booked before you set up, usually online through QPWS. No pets, no collecting firewood, no dumping grey water, and generators are restricted or banned in many areas. Council beach reserves and free camps have their own stay limits and permit rules; rangers do check, especially in holiday periods.

• Best easy win: a powered holiday-park site within 50-60 km of town.
• Best nature option: Smalleys Beach at Cape Hillsborough National Park, if you have a permit and the site suits your vehicle length.
• Best grey-nomad rule: arrive by 3 pm, put the kettle on, then decide whether tomorrow is adventurous.

Mackay has the boring things that make a camper trip work: servos, supermarkets, hardware stores, laundries and bottle-o stops. Use them. Once you push into the Pioneer Valley, up towards Eungella or north past Proserpine, services thin out and opening hours become less forgiving than your itinerary spreadsheet.

Most 2-berth and 4-berth campervans are happiest if you refuel every 300-400 km, even if the theoretical range is higher. Between Mackay, Proserpine, Bowen, Sarina and Clermont there are proper servos, but heat, headwinds and air-con use can nudge fuel consumption up.
