Perth to Canberra campervan route across the Nullarbor

The fast version is about 3,800 km and roughly 42–45 hours behind the wheel, depending on roadworks, wind and how often your passenger says they only need “a quick stretch”. You can technically push it in 6–7 long driving days, but in a campervan that is joyless and a bit daft.

For most self-drivers, 10 to 14 days is the sweet spot. That gives you room to cross the Nullarbor without driving at dusk, do laundry before the van develops its own weather system, and spend a proper night at Broken Hill or Mildura instead of treating them like fuel bowsers with buildings.

• Minimum sensible time: 7 days, with two very long WA days.
• Comfortable time: 10–12 days, especially in summer heat.
• Relaxed road-trip time: 14+ days, with Esperance or the Flinders Ranges added if your hire conditions allow.
• Do: book the first and last nights near Perth and Canberra.
• Don’t: plan 700 km days back-to-back if you are new to a motorhome.

You do not need a 4WD for the standard Perth to Canberra motorhome road trip via Great Eastern Highway, Eyre Highway, Barrier Highway and the Riverina. It is sealed the whole way. What you do need is respect for distance, crosswinds, road trains and fatigue.

The big mental shift happens after Norseman. The Nullarbor is not one empty stretch; it is a chain of roadhouses, scrub, cliffs and long, straight bitumen. The famous 90 Mile Straight between Balladonia and Caiguna is 146.6 km of steering-wheel meditation. Fine in daylight. Tedious when tired. Bad at dusk when roos and wombats start auditioning for insurance claims.

• Norseman to Balladonia: about 191 km.
• Balladonia to Caiguna: about 182 km, including the 146.6 km straight.
• Caiguna to Cocklebiddy: about 65 km.
• Madura to Mundrabilla: about 115 km, often windy.
• Nullarbor Roadhouse to Penong: about 147 km.
• Do: let road trains pass by easing left when safe and holding a steady line.
• Don’t: pull onto soft shoulders in a heavy motorhome unless you can see they are firm.

A hired campervan with a full tank will handle this route easily, but you should still think like an old truckie: never roll past fuel in remote country if the gauge is sulking below half. Prices across the Nullarbor can jump well above city servo rates, and opening hours may change, especially around public holidays.

Plan your van chores around the bigger towns. Perth, Kalgoorlie, Norseman, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Mildura, Hay, Wagga Wagga and Canberra all have a mix of fuel, supermarkets, potable water options and public or caravan-park dump points. Roadhouses may offer water, but do not assume it is free or suitable for filling your main tank unless it is clearly marked potable.

• Best stock-up before the Nullarbor: Norseman, after Perth/Kalgoorlie.
• Best reset after the Nullarbor: Ceduna, with supermarket, laundry and dump-point options.
• LPG swaps/refills: easiest in larger towns; do not leave it until a tiny roadhouse.
• Recommended fuel range: 500 km minimum comfort buffer, even though the biggest signed gaps are much shorter.
• Do: carry 10–20 litres of spare drinking water separate from the van tank.
• Don’t: empty grey water on the ground; use dump points or approved disposal areas.

Free camping is possible on parts of this route, but it is not a national right bestowed by owning a folding chair. Each council, national park and roadside rest area has its own rules. Some allow overnight stays for self-contained vehicles; others are day-use only or ban camping altogether.

Across the Nullarbor, roadhouse caravan areas and simple bush-style rest stops are part of the rhythm. In towns, use powered holiday parks when you need showers, washing machines and a proper dump point. In hot weather, a powered site is not a luxury; it is the difference between sleeping and slowly becoming jerky.

• Good first-night logic: stay east of Perth only if you collect the van early; otherwise book near the city and learn the switches.
• Remote-night logic: aim for roadhouse or signed rest-area stops before 4 pm.
• National parks: book where required and check generator rules; many sites have no bins or dump points.
• Self-contained means: toilet, grey-water management and rubbish taken with you — not just a mattress and optimism.
• Do: read the sign at every rest area before setting up.
• Don’t: camp on cliff edges along the Bunda Cliffs in strong wind; the view is not worth a sideways van.

The west-to-east crossing has quarantine rules, especially around fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and soil. Expect checks around the SA border/Ceduna system and do not try the classic “hide the mangoes under the tea towel” move. Inspectors have seen better actors than you.

Weather also shapes this trip. Summer days across the Nullarbor and inland NSW can sit above 35°C, occasionally nudging 40°C. Winter nights can drop close to 0°C around the WA Goldfields, Broken Hill and the Riverina. Strong crosswinds are common on open plains, and a tall motorhome feels them more than a hatchback.

• Best seasons: April–June and August–October for milder driving.
• Summer caution: drive early, carry extra water and use powered sites for air-conditioning where allowed.
• Winter caution: pack warm bedding; van floors get cold fast.
• Quarantine tip: eat or cook fresh produce before checkpoints, then restock in Ceduna or Port Augusta.
• Do: check hire conditions before taking any unsealed side roads to lookouts.
• Don’t: drive after dark in kangaroo country unless there is no safe alternative.
