Perth to Gold Coast campervan route for drivers who sleep onboard

australiamotorhomes.com

Red dust in the mirror, a road train filling the windscreen, and 181 km of straight bitumen ahead: the Perth to Gold Coast campervan run is not a quick nip across town. It is a proper continent-crossing drive, with roadhouse coffee, quarantine bins, hot winds and the occasional emu making poor life choices near the shoulder.

This page is for self-drivers hiring a campervan or motorhome and sleeping in it — not coach passengers, not rental-car motel hoppers. You will get the practical bones of the perth to gold coast drive: legs, realistic days, fuel gaps, dump points, camp styles, road-train manners and where to be a bit less heroic.

LEG BY LEG

The drive, broken down

  1. Perth to Norseman via Kalgoorlie724 km · 8 hr 20

Long first leg; top up fuel and groceries before Norseman, the western gate to the Nullarbor.

  2. Norseman to Border Village720 km · 7 hr 45

Includes Balladonia to Caiguna at about 181 km and the 90 Mile Straight; fuel is available but dearer.

  3. Border Village to Ceduna490 km · 5 hr 15

Bunda Cliffs side stops are tempting; stay on permitted sealed or approved access roads and mind quarantine near Ceduna.

  4. Ceduna to Port Augusta470 km · 5 hr 15

Kimba makes a handy halfway break, with easier restocking as you roll towards the Spencer Gulf.

  5. Port Augusta to Broken Hill414 km · 4 hr 50

Sealed Barrier Highway country; watch for goats, emus, crosswinds and very sleepy straight sections.

  6. Broken Hill to Cobar457 km · 5 hr

Fuel and food at Wilcannia if operating; start early and avoid late-afternoon wildlife traffic.

  7. Cobar to Moree via Bourke and Walgett505 km · 5 hr 45

Sealed inland run, but western NSW roads can close after heavy rain; check conditions before leaving Cobar.

  8. Moree to Gold Coast via Goondiwindi and Warwick486 km · 6 hr

A final country-to-coast day with range driving near Cunningham Gap and busy M1 traffic near the beaches.

How long this crossing really takes

The sealed route from Perth to the Gold Coast via the Nullarbor, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Cobar, Moree and Warwick is roughly 4,250 km. You can technically knock it over in 8 or 9 big driving days, but that turns a campervan holiday into a beige blur of servos and tired sandwiches.

A better pace is 12 to 16 days, with a two-night stop at Ceduna, Broken Hill or Moree when the laundry bag starts developing a personality. If this is part of a Big Lap, give it 18 days and you can slow down without annoying the grey nomads behind you at the dump point.

  • Minimum sensible pace: 9 days, mostly 5–8 hour driving days.
  • Comfortable pace: 12–16 days with restock and rest days.
  • Best seasons: April to October for cooler crossings; summer can mean 35–45°C inland.
  • Do: start early and park up before dusk, when kangaroos, goats and fatigue all clock on.
  • Don’t: plan 700 km days back-to-back unless everyone onboard enjoys silence and instant noodles.

The route: sealed roads, big skies and no 4WD heroics

This Perth to Gold Coast motorhome road trip stays on sealed highways: Great Eastern Highway, Eyre Highway, Princes/Barrier Highway, then inland sealed roads through western NSW and southern Queensland. A 2WD campervan or motorhome is the right tool for this job. A snorkel and sand flag are not.

The Nullarbor is not one empty 1,200 km fuel desert, but it does punish lazy planning. Roadhouses sit between about 65 km and 191 km apart across the WA/SA stretch, yet prices can be noticeably higher than Perth or the coast, and occasional closures, card outages or fuel delivery delays do happen. Treat half a tank as your new empty.

  • Norseman to Balladonia: about 191 km.
  • Balladonia to Caiguna: about 181 km, including the famous 90 Mile Straight.
  • Bourke to Walgett: about 230 km on sealed inland roads, with fewer comforts than the map suggests.
  • Moree to Goondiwindi: about 125 km, then the climb towards Warwick and the range descent to the coast.
  • Do: check road conditions after heavy rain in western NSW; black-soil country can close fast.
  • Don’t: take unsealed cliff, beach or station-track shortcuts unless your hire agreement explicitly allows it.

Where to sleep without getting moved on

There are plenty of legal overnights if you mix caravan parks, roadhouse camps, showgrounds, council RV areas and signed rest stops. The trick is not assuming every scenic gravel patch is fair game. Local councils, national parks and main-road authorities all have their own rules, and the Gold Coast is especially unfriendly to beachside stealth camping.

Across WA and SA, many highway rest areas allow short stays where signed, but they are basic: no power, sometimes no toilets, and usually no water. In NSW and Queensland, showgrounds and caravan parks become more useful because you will want proper showers, dump points and a powered night to recharge the house battery.

  • Good reset towns: Norseman, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Cobar, Moree.
  • Dump points: commonly available in larger caravan parks, many showgrounds and some visitor-centre or council RV areas.
  • Water: fill drinking tanks at holiday parks or marked potable taps; never assume a roadside tap is safe.
  • Do: arrive before dark, especially at free camps where level spots go early in winter.
  • Don’t: empty grey water or cassette toilets into bushland, stormwater drains or roadside toilets. That is how we lose the good spots.

Nullarbor quirks: quarantine, time zones and road trains

The Nullarbor has its own rhythm. You may cross from WA to SA time, pass through the unofficial Eucla time zone, and still have no idea what your microwave clock thinks is happening. More important: fruit-fly quarantine. Eastbound travellers are checked around Ceduna, so eat or dispose of restricted fruit and vegetables before you get there.

Road trains are part of the landscape out here. Some combinations can be over 50 m long, and they do not stop like a hatchback. If one is coming the other way, keep left, hold a steady line and do not drift onto the gravel shoulder unless you need to. If one is overtaking you, ease off gently and let the driver get the job done.

  • Quarantine: bins and inspections are real; do not hide fruit because you paid $6 for mangoes.
  • Road trains: expect heavy vehicles on Eyre, Barrier and inland freight routes.
  • Wind: crosswinds can push high-roof motorhomes around near open plains and coastal cliffs.
  • Do: carry at least 10–20 litres of drinking water per person as a reserve in hot weather.
  • Don’t: park right behind a road train at a servo; give the driver room to swing.

Motorhome practicalities before you book

For this crossing, comfort matters more than Instagram. A toilet and shower onboard make free camps easier, but you will still need dump points every few days. A larger motorhome gives you space, yet it also means more fuel, slower hill climbs and fewer cosy urban parking options once you reach the Gold Coast.

Most 2-berth and 4-berth campervans are fine on the sealed route. Watch height in supermarket car parks and beachside streets — many campervans sit around 2.7–3.3 m high, while some motorhomes are longer than 7 m. The Gold Coast has low clearances, tight holiday-park sites and peak-hour traffic that feels very far from the Nullarbor.

  • Power: 240V outlets generally work only when plugged into a powered site.
  • Gas: plan LPG bottle swaps or refills in larger towns rather than tiny roadhouses.
  • Fridge: pre-cool before remote sections and avoid opening it every 12 minutes for “just a look”.
  • Booking: one-way campervan availability can tighten in school holidays and winter migration season.
  • Do: check availability online early if your dates are fixed.
  • Don’t: choose the biggest rig if you are nervous in city traffic or tight caravan parks.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Questions self-drivers actually ask

Can I drive from Perth to the Gold Coast in a 2WD campervan?
Yes, this route is sealed and suitable for a 2WD campervan or motorhome. The catch is your hire agreement: many vehicles are not allowed on unsealed roads, beaches or rough cliff tracks, even if the map makes them look short and harmless.
How many days should I allow for a Perth to Gold Coast campervan trip?
Allow at least 9 days if you only need to relocate and can handle long driving days. For a proper self-drive trip with laundry, rest days and less marital tension, 12 to 16 days is much better.
Where is the biggest fuel concern on this route?
The Nullarbor has regular roadhouses, but gaps of 180–190 km are common and prices are higher than city servos. Inland NSW also has stretches around 200–230 km between reliable larger-town fuel stops, so refill before you are desperate.
Can I free camp the whole way?
Not comfortably, and not legally everywhere. Use signed rest areas and council-approved RV stops where allowed, but budget for powered sites every few nights for showers, laundry, battery charging, fresh water and cassette dumping.
Do I need to book caravan parks ahead?
Book key stops if travelling during school holidays, Easter, winter grey-nomad season or when arriving on the Gold Coast. Remote roadhouse camps can also fill with caravans, road crews and truck traffic, so do not assume a late arrival will be charming.
What should I know before arriving on the Gold Coast?
Do not plan to sleep in beach car parks or suburban streets; councils patrol and fines are a sour ending to a big crossing. Choose a holiday park or legal campground, watch low-clearance car parks, and check availability online before you roll into peak-season traffic.
