Perth to Mackay campervan route for long-haul sleepers

The shortest-looking line across the map is not always the friendliest one for a hired camper. This route keeps you mostly on sealed highways: Great Eastern Highway, Eyre Highway, Barrier Highway, Mitchell Highway, Carnarvon-side country and the Peak Downs Highway into Mackay.

Allow 12 to 18 days if you want to arrive with your fillings still in place. You can physically drive it faster, but 5,000 km in a campervan is not a heroic montage; it is fuel receipts, laundry, dump points and the odd afternoon where everyone needs to stop talking for an hour.

Useful fuel stretches include Norseman to Balladonia at about 191 km, Balladonia to Caiguna at about 182 km, Caiguna to Madura around 154 km, and Madura to Eucla around 182 km. Prices are commonly higher out here, so fill before the gauge starts doing interpretive dance.

Free or low-cost stops are useful on the long hauls, but read the signs: some are day-use only, some have 20-hour limits, and some councils are very unromantic about illegal camping.

Public dump points are commonly available around Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Norseman, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Bourke, Charleville, Roma, Emerald and Mackay, though locations can change with maintenance. Check a current dump point app or council listing before you rely on one, especially after floods.

Out here, a road train can be 50 metres long, throw a bow wave of air, and need more room than your average city driver has ever imagined. When one is coming toward you, hold your line, ease off slightly and keep both hands on the wheel. If one is behind you, do not panic; wait for a safe straight and let it pass.

Most of this perth to mackay drive is sealed, but shoulders can be soft, flood-damaged or sharply dropped away. Avoid pulling half-off the road for photos unless you can get fully clear on firm ground. A loaded motorhome bogged in red dirt is not a character-building exercise; it is an expensive afternoon.

By the time you reach Roma, the trip changes mood. The red dirt is still there, but the traffic mix becomes cattle trucks, mining utes and caravans heading for the coast. Roma to Emerald via Injune, Rolleston and Springsure is a practical sealed inland line, then Clermont and Nebo put you onto the final run toward Mackay.

The Peak Downs Highway can be busy with heavy vehicles, and the Eton Range descent into Mackay deserves respect in a motorhome. Use lower gears, do not ride the brakes, and arrive in daylight if you can. In the wet season, roughly November to April, localised flooding can close roads quickly; a servo coffee is better than becoming a rescue story.

• Fuel planning: do not skip Roma, Emerald or Clermont unless your range is excellent.
• Heat: inland Queensland can sit in the mid-to-high 30s°C, even outside peak summer.
