Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour campervan route without the highway blink

You can drive Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour before lunch. Plenty do. They also miss the river ferries, headlands, bakery towns and that odd grey-nomad sport of comparing awning pegs in a southerly.

The main highway is dual carriageway for much of the run, with B-doubles and road trains moving at work pace. They are not being rude; they are being heavy. Sit on a steady speed, use overtaking lanes, and leave proper braking room when rain hits the bitumen.

The coastal detours to Crescent Head and South West Rocks are sealed if you take the normal roads via Kempsey and Gladstone. The trap is the tempting dirt around Point Plomer, Maria River Road and beach access tracks. Many campervan hire agreements exclude unsealed roads and all beach driving unless specifically allowed.

• Port Macquarie to Kempsey: about 49 km, an easy fuel and grocery reset.
• Kempsey to South West Rocks: about 38 km, sealed via Smithtown/Gladstone.
• Waterfall Way: sealed, but steep and bendy between Bellingen and Dorrigo.
• Do: downshift on long descents rather than cooking the brakes.

This is not the Nullarbor. Servos are frequent enough, but a campervan fridge, air-con use and headwinds can make the fuel gauge sulk. Treat 300 km of safe fuel range as plenty for this route, and refill before leaving Bellingen for Dorrigo if you are under half a tank.

Dump points and potable water are easiest in the bigger towns and showground/holiday-park belts. Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Nambucca/Macksville and Coffs Harbour are the practical service stops. Access changes with council works, lock-ups and guest-only rules, so check the current dump-point app or council listing before you commit your cassette to a plan.

• Best service rhythm: empty and refill every second day, not when the warning light starts nagging.
• LPG: swap/refill options are commonly found at larger servos and hardware stores in Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour.
• Water: use signed potable taps only; not every tap near a beach shower is drinking water.
• Don’t: dump grey water in street drains or bushland. It is illegal, feral and a good way to ruin free camping for everyone.

The best overnight mix is one national-park-style coastal camp, one practical town/showground night, and one powered reset before Coffs. That gives you scenery without turning the van into a humid laundry basket.

Trial Bay Gaol Campground is the classic if you want kangaroos, old stone walls and a morning swim, but it is inside a national park area: book ahead, no pets, follow generator hours, and expect school holidays to fill early. Bellingen Showground is less postcard, more practical gold — walkable town, flatter sites, and usually easier for longer vehicles.

• Powered sites: useful after 2 nights off-grid, especially in summer humidity.
• National parks: book online, keep food secure, no pets, no collecting firewood.
• Free camping: fatigue rest areas are for resting, not setting up awnings, chairs and the full bottle-o picnic.
• Do: check max vehicle length before booking if your motorhome is 7 m or more.

Summer on this strip can sit around 27–32°C by day with sticky nights and afternoon storms. The coast feels friendly until every towel in the van becomes a damp flag of surrender. A powered site every couple of nights is not soft; it is laundry management.

Winter is excellent driving weather, often 10–20°C, but Dorrigo can be properly cool at night and foggy in the morning. After heavy rain, waterfalls are better and some unsealed side roads are worse. If a road says 4WD only, believe the sign, not the bloke at the servo who “got through once in the ute”.

• Best months: March–May and September–November for mild days and fewer school-holiday crowds.
• Summer watch: storms, high humidity, booked-out beach parks.
• Winter watch: fog on Waterfall Way and chilly hinterland mornings.
• Don’t: drive into floodwater. Even shallow-looking crossings shift quickly on the Mid North Coast.
