A practical sunshine coast to adelaide campervan route, without the silly shortcuts

The cleanest motorhome-friendly line is Sunshine Coast to Toowoomba, then Goondiwindi, Moree, Narrabri, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Parkes/Forbes, West Wyalong, Hay, Mildura and into Adelaide via Renmark. It is sealed all the way, keeps you on proper highways, and avoids the romantic-looking dirt shortcuts that rental agreements tend to loathe.

Allow 6 to 8 days if you want to arrive human. Four days is technically possible in the same way eating a family meat pie while driving is technically possible: legal questions aside, nobody needs to see it.

Most hired campervans have a touring range of roughly 500 to 700 km, but plan as though the next servo is shut for lunch, roadworks or plain country mystery.

• Carry at least 10 litres of drinking water per person, separate from your tank supply.

Water is the other quiet boss of the trip. A typical 2-berth or 4-berth campervan may carry around 80 to 110 litres of fresh water, which disappears quickly once showers, washing up and handwashing enter the chat. Refill at holiday parks, signed potable taps, visitor centres where allowed, and some council facilities.

• Never empty grey water onto the ground unless the site specifically allows it.
• Use potable-water hoses only for drinking-water fills, not the same hose used at dump points.
• Keep a few gold coins or a card handy for showgrounds, laundries and water stations.
• If free camping, arrive self-contained and leave with every drop and wrapper you brought in.

On the Newell, Sturt and Mallee highway sections you will share the road with B-doubles, grain trucks and the occasional road train. If one sits behind you, hold your line, keep your speed steady, and let them pass when there is a clear straight. Do not drift onto the shoulder to be polite; soft edges and motorhomes are not mates.

Summer inland temperatures can sit at 35 to 42°C, which makes unpowered nights chewy and tyres work harder. Winter mornings around the central west and Riverina can drop near 0°C, but the driving is usually kinder. After heavy rain, check flood warnings around low-lying western NSW roads; a road marked sealed can still be closed by water.

• Drive with headlights on in dusty or wet conditions.
• Avoid dawn and dusk if you can; roos, emus and goats are enthusiastic but poorly insured.
