You can drive the Sunshine Coast to Kalgoorlie route in 7 hard days if the weather behaves and nobody in the van has strong opinions about lunch. A better plan is 10 to 14 days, especially in a motorhome where pack-up, fuel, dump points and a proper cuppa all eat time.

The fastest sensible line runs Sunshine Coast to Goondiwindi, then Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, across the Nullarbor to Norseman, and north to Kalgoorlie. This is a self-drive motorhome route, so the overnight plan matters as much as the kilometres. Aim for a powered site every second or third night if you are running a fridge, devices and air-con in hot weather. Free camps are useful, but they do not magically provide a dump point, drinking water or a level bay away from snorers.

Reliable service towns on this run include Goondiwindi, Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman and Kalgoorlie. Most have public dump points or caravan park facilities, but check locally before you arrive full. In summer, drinking water is not a decorative extra; carry at least 10 L per person in reserve, separate from the van tank if you can.

Phone reception drops in and out, crosswinds can shove a high-top van around, and the horizon has a way of making sensible people drive too long.

Before Ceduna, do a proper reset: fuel, LPG if needed, drinking water, groceries, tyre pressures and rubbish. Westbound travellers entering WA face quarantine inspection at the border area; fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and some other fresh items can be seized. Eat the apples before the border, not while explaining yourself to an officer.

A compact campervan will use less fuel and fit into tighter sites, but a shower-toilet motorhome earns its keep on this route when the next amenities are 200 km away. If you are travelling in hotter months, look closely at battery capacity, fridge size, awning shade and whether air-con runs only on 240 V power.

One-way hire from Queensland to Western Australia can be limited, especially during school holidays, winter migration season and peak Big Lap months. Check availability online before building a spreadsheet worthy of NASA. If the exact Sunshine Coast pick-up is not available, Brisbane departures may open more vehicle options and still keep the route straightforward.
