The sunshine coast to mildura campervan run, done sensibly

From Maroochydore, allow about 1,785 km to Mildura via Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Moree, Dubbo, West Wyalong, Hay and Balranald. You can flog it in four long days, but five to seven days is the calmer campervan version, especially if you are new to sleeping in the vehicle and learning where every cupboard latch rattles.

After Toowoomba, the country settles into wheat, cotton and big-sky driving. Toowoomba to Goondiwindi is about 220 km, then Goondiwindi to Moree is a short 126 km hop across the Queensland-New South Wales border. Moree to Dubbo is the first properly long inland day at roughly 390 km via Narrabri, Coonabarabran and Gilgandra.

• Fuel reality: do not skip cheap-looking fuel in Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Moree, Narrabri or Coonabarabran just because the tank says you will make it.
• Road-train note: give trucks room, avoid sitting beside them, and pull right off the lane if you stop for a cuppa.
• Campervan note: check your fridge latch after the Toowoomba climb unless you enjoy yoghurt archaeology.

Dubbo is the sensible reset point on this sunshine coast to mildura motorhome road trip: big supermarkets, LPG swaps, fuel, laundries, mechanics and enough caravan park choice that you are not betting the night on a single campground. From Dubbo, the easy line runs through Parkes and Forbes to West Wyalong, then west-south-west to Hay.

West Wyalong to Hay is about 262 km if you go via Goolgowi. Treat that as the route's longest no-fuss fuel gap, because small-town opening hours can be whimsical once you are outside the bigger centres. The Hay Plains are famously flat, which sounds easy until a crosswind starts leaning on a high-roof campervan like a bored cattle dog.

• Do: top up at West Wyalong before the Hay leg.
• Don't: overtake a road train unless you can see a very long, very empty stretch.
• Watch for: emus, roos at dawn and dusk, and harvest traffic around grain towns.

For a first-timer, powered holiday parks or showgrounds are worth their keep on this run. You get easier parking, mains power, showers, laundry and often a dump point. Free camps can be terrific, but arrive before dark and read the signs; some are rest areas for fatigue stops only, not a three-day annex village.

Reliable dump-point towns along this corridor include major service centres such as Goondiwindi, Moree, Dubbo, West Wyalong, Hay, Balranald and Mildura, though exact access can change with council works or events. Check the dump point before you fill the cassette to the brim like an optimist. Fresh water is generally easiest at caravan parks, showgrounds and visitor-centre-adjacent facilities where signed.

• Rule of thumb: empty the toilet cassette every 2-3 days for two people.
• Water: many 2-berth and 4-berth vans carry roughly 80-120 L; use it like you paid to cart it, because you did.
• Free camping: legal where permitted by signage or council rules; fines and ranger wake-ups are a poor breakfast.

Summer inland temperatures can sit above 35°C, and 40°C days are not rare from western New South Wales into Mildura. In that weather, a powered site is not a luxury; it is how you run the air-con without flattening the house battery and your mood. Carry at least 5-10 L of drinking water per person as a separate emergency stash.

The wet can also rewrite the trip. Black-soil roads around the plains become slippery paste, and flood detours on the Newell, Sturt or local access roads can add hundreds of kilometres. If a road is signed closed, it is closed; hire agreements and insurance do not usually reward creative bogging.

• Mungo National Park side trip: stunning from Mildura, but access includes unsealed sections. Check road conditions and your hire conditions before you point a 2WD motorhome down there.
• National parks: book campsites online where required, keep generators to permitted hours, and remember pets are generally not allowed.
• LPG: swap or refill in larger towns rather than arriving late Sunday in a small place with a cold dinner and a sad face.
