A Sunshine Coast to Townsville campervan route for proper self-drivers

The direct Sunshine Coast to Townsville motorhome road trip is roughly 1,270 km if you stay glued to the Bruce Highway. The route below comes in closer to 1,380 km because it bends into Agnes Water and Airlie Beach — worthwhile detours if you did not hire a van just to admire servo forecourts.

In a camper, sensible days are 220 to 350 km. That gives you time to fill water, empty the cassette, find a legal camp before dark and not reverse a 7-metre motorhome into a pandanus while tired.

• Fast but fair: 4 days, big driving blocks, mostly powered parks or known free camps.
• Comfortable: 6 days, with Agnes Water and Airlie Beach included.
• Grey-nomad pace: 8 to 10 days, add Cape Hillsborough, Bowen and Magnetic Island from Townsville.
• Don’t: plan on averaging 100 km/h all day. Roadworks, cane trucks, town speed zones and lunch queues at the bakery will sort that fantasy out.

Fuel is not remote-outback scary on this run, but the distances still catch new Big Lappers. Keep the tank above half from Rockhampton north; not every roadhouse has the price, hours or manoeuvring space you were hoping for.

Useful fuel gaps to respect are Childers to Miriam Vale at about 170 km, Miriam Vale to Rockhampton at about 170 km, Rockhampton to Marlborough at 106 km, and Mackay to Proserpine at 126 km. The longer Rockhampton-to-Mackay leg is 336 km, with services along the way, but you do not want to be doing mental maths in 32°C heat with the low-fuel light winking at you.

• Road trains: common north of Rockhampton; let them pass, hold your line and do not sit beside one.
• Cane trucks: active around Bundaberg, Mackay, Proserpine, Ayr and Home Hill in crushing season, roughly June to November.
• Night driving: avoid it. Roos, cattle, potholes after rain and tired drivers are a poor mix.
• Do: use bigger servos for diesel, LPG bottle swaps and easier turning circles.

Free camping is part of the fun, but Queensland councils take a dim view of “just one night” beside a beach shower block. Infringements can sit around the $300 mark depending on the local law, and rangers do patrol coastal towns where campervans gather like gulls around hot chips.

Use signed rest areas, council-approved RV stops, national park campgrounds booked in advance, or proper holiday parks. If your hire vehicle is not self-contained, many free camps are off the table. That means onboard toilet access, grey-water rules where signed, and no midnight dishwater trickling into the grass.

• Good first rhythm: powered site every second or third night for laundry, full recharge and long showers.
• Dump points: look around Gympie, Childers, Bundaberg, Gin Gin, Miriam Vale, Rockhampton, Mackay, Proserpine, Bowen, Ayr/Home Hill and Townsville.
• Water: do not assume every dump point has potable water. Fill when signed potable, not just when a tap exists.
• Don’t: camp in national park day-use areas. Book QPWS sites online and follow generator, pet and fire rules.

May to October is the easiest window: drier skies, cooler nights and fewer tropical surprises. Daytime temperatures often sit around 24°C to 29°C on the coast, warm enough for shorts without turning the van into a mobile sauna.

November to April brings heat, humidity, heavy rain and the chance of cyclones or flooded creek crossings north of Rockhampton. The Bruce Highway is sealed, but sealed does not mean immune. A single flooded low point can delay you for hours or days, and hire agreements generally do not smile upon water crossings or unsealed detours.

• Check daily: Queensland Traffic, BOM warnings and local council disaster dashboards in the wet.
• Swimming: marine stingers are a real issue in northern waters in the warmer months; use signed stinger enclosures where provided.
• Van comfort: book powered sites during heatwaves so you can run air-conditioning legally and quietly.
• Do: carry 10 to 20 litres of drinking water separate from your main tank.

Agnes Water and 1770 add a softer coastal pause before the long central Queensland haul. The roads in are sealed and camper-friendly, though beach sand is not. If your rental agreement says no beaches and no 4WD tracks, believe it; recovery bills have a nasty sense of humour.

Airlie Beach is the obvious Whitsundays stop, but it is not the place to wing it in school holidays. Powered sites book out, street parking is tight for larger motorhomes, and some car parks have height limits that treat roof air-conditioners like personal insults.

• Agnes Water: good reset after Bundaberg; book a park if you want showers and easy beach access.
• Cape Hillsborough: a worthy Mackay-side detour, but watch narrow park roads and wildlife at dawn.
• Bowen: easier than Airlie for a quieter night, with big-rig-friendly options around town.
• Don’t: take a 2WD camper onto sand, private tracks or wet unsealed roads just because a map app is feeling creative.
