Sydney to Townsville campervan route: coast, ranges and sensible overnight stops

The Sydney to Townsville motorhome road trip is roughly 2,090 km by the inland-coastal line via the Pacific Motorway, New England Highway, Cunningham Highway, Bruce Highway and Capricorn coast. You can physically do it in 4 big days, but that is not a holiday; that is a long-distance freight apprenticeship with a fridge.

Seven days is the sensible minimum for most van hirers. Ten days gives you proper breathing room for dump points, laundry, beach walks, a national park night and the odd servo pie that looked better under fluorescent lighting.

• Fast but sane: 6 to 7 days, averaging 300 to 420 km a day.
• Comfortable: 8 to 10 days, with shorter coastal legs north of Rockhampton.
• Fuel comfort: top up when the tank drops below half; servos are frequent on this route but some stretches are 100 to 170 km between larger towns.
• Do: leave Sydney after peak hour if you can. Don’t: plan your first van night after dark in an unknown suburb.

The fully coastal Pacific Highway route is straightforward, but taking the New England Highway through Tamworth and Toowoomba spreads the traffic load and gives you cooler high-country nights before you drop back to the Queensland coast. In summer, that can be the difference between sleeping and lying in a van listening to one mosquito file a flight plan.

From Sydney, head north-west through the Hunter and Tamworth, then on to Armidale or Glen Innes country before crossing into Queensland. Toowoomba is your practical reset point: supermarkets, LPG, laundries, dump points and enough roundabouts to test a relationship.

• Sydney to Tamworth: about 410 km, mostly highway with climbs through the Hunter and Liverpool Range.
• Tamworth to Toowoomba: about 520 km via Armidale, Tenterfield and Warwick; break it if you dislike long van days.
• Toowoomba to Rockhampton: about 620 km via Dalby, Miles, Banana and Gracemere; big sky, grain country and increasing road-train presence.
• Road note: the Cunningham Gap can be steep and busy. Use lower gears on descents and let impatient locals go.

A self-drive campervan trip lives or dies by the unromantic stuff: toilets, rubbish, grey water, drinking water and whether the site is level enough that your pasta does not roll off the bench. Holiday parks are the easy button on this route, especially in Sydney, Tamworth, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville.

Free and low-cost camps exist, but rules vary by council. Some require a fully self-contained vehicle, some ban tents but allow motorhomes, and some are day-use only despite what an old forum post says. If the sign says no camping, it means your van too — not just the bloke with the swag.

• Dump points: commonly found at showgrounds, visitor centres, council RV stops and many holiday parks; use public dump point apps and check opening hours.
• Water: fill potable water at parks or signed public taps; never assume a random tap at a park is drinking water.
• Grey water: do not drain onto the ground unless a site specifically permits it.
• Typical powered site cost: often around $45–$75 a night for two adults, higher in school holidays and beach towns.

South of Brisbane, you can get lazy with fuel. North and west of Toowoomba, do not. The distances are not outback-scary, but a headwind, air-con, hills and a tall motorhome can make a fuel gauge move like it owes money.

Expect a 2-berth campervan to use roughly 10–13 L/100 km and a larger motorhome more like 13–18 L/100 km depending on load, speed and wind. Keep at least 150 km of range in reserve. Road trains and B-doubles are common between Dalby, Miles, Banana, Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville, especially around agricultural and mining freight corridors.

• Toowoomba to Dalby: 84 km — easy, but fill before the longer western run if needed.
• Dalby to Miles: 127 km — open road, watch fatigue and wildlife near dusk.
• Miles to Banana: 170 km — not remote, but do not pass fuel if your tank is low.
• Rockhampton to Mackay: 335 km — several fuel options, but it still feels longer in heat.
• Do: slow down and let road trains overtake safely. Don’t: sit beside one in crosswinds or spray.

This route can be done year-round in a normal 2WD campervan or motorhome, staying on sealed roads. The catch is weather. From about November to April, northern Queensland is hot, humid and in the wet-season risk window. Daytime Townsville temperatures commonly sit around 30–33°C in summer, and nights may stay above 24°C.

Winter and the shoulder months are kinder: cool New England nights, drier air and better sleeping weather. If heavy rain hits the Bruce Highway, check official road conditions before pushing north; low-lying sections and side roads can flood, and no rental agreement will thank you for treating a motorhome like a tinny.

• Best months: April to October for easier driving and sleeping.
• Heat tip: choose powered sites when nights are over 25°C so you can run approved cooling.
• Dirt-road note: stay sealed unless your hire agreement explicitly allows unsealed roads.
• National parks: book Queensland Parks sites online before arrival; many have no bins, no power and strict generator rules.
