A practical Toowoomba to Bendigo campervan run down the Newell

You can technically drive a Toowoomba to Bendigo campervan route in two heroic days, but that is how people arrive cross-eyed, under-showered and muttering at the fridge. A sensible self-drive pace is four days; five is better if you want hot artesian water at Moree, stars near Coonabarabran, or a proper Murray River pause before Bendigo.

The route is all sealed and suitable for 2WD campervans and motorhomes, but it is long inland driving: open paddocks, hot crosswinds, grain trucks and fewer late-night services than coastal folk expect. In summer, daytime temperatures can sit in the mid-30s to low-40s °C across the western NSW sections.

• Fast but tiring: 3 days, about 480-520 km per day.
• Comfortable: 4 days, usually Toowoomba-Goondiwindi/Moree, Coonabarabran/Dubbo, West Wyalong/Jerilderie, Bendigo.
• Grey-nomad sane: 5 days with time for baths, bakeries, dump points and not driving at roo o'clock.

Do book powered sites ahead in school holidays, long weekends and during big regional events. If you are still choosing a van, check availability online before locking your camp dates.

From Toowoomba, drop south-west on the Gore Highway through Pittsworth and Millmerran to Goondiwindi. After that you are mostly on the Newell Highway, one of Australia's big inland freight spines. It is practical, direct and not especially cuddly.

Fuel is not Outback-remote, but distances are real. Toowoomba to Goondiwindi is about 220 km, Goondiwindi to Moree 125 km, Moree to Narrabri 100 km, Narrabri to Coonabarabran 119 km, and Coonabarabran to Dubbo about 153 km via Gilgandra. South of Dubbo, expect 120-150 km hops between the bigger towns if you stick to Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong and Narrandera.

• Do: refill when you are below half a tank, especially late afternoon or on Sundays in smaller towns.
• Do not: assume every servo has easy high-roof clearance, LPG swap bottles, drinking-water access or room to swing a long rear overhang.
• Worth knowing: Queensland does not observe daylight saving; NSW and Victoria do from early October to early April, so your clock may jump after the border.

The Toowoomba to Bendigo motorhome road trip is not about one spectacular pass. It is a chain of workable legs, and that is exactly why it suits a self-contained van.

Good overnight rhythm matters on this run. Showgrounds and holiday parks in Goondiwindi, Moree, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Parkes, West Wyalong, Narrandera, Tocumwal, Echuca and Bendigo are the dependable choices for powered sites, showers and laundry. Free or low-cost town camps do exist, but always check time limits, self-containment rules and whether overnight stays are currently permitted.

Public dump points are commonly available in the bigger route towns, often near showgrounds, visitor areas, caravan parks or council facilities. Do not leave cassette waste in rest-area toilets. Apart from being feral, it can get sites closed for everyone else.

• Water: fill potable tanks at caravan parks, selected dump point stations or signed town taps only; not every tap beside a toilet block is drinking water.
• LPG: swap bottles are easier in Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Moree, Dubbo, Parkes, Echuca and Bendigo than in tiny villages after dark.
• Typical powered sites: often around $35-$60 per night depending on town, season and facilities; free camps may require a donation or strict 24-48 hour limit.

If your hire vehicle has a grey-water tank, use it properly. Some freedom camps only accept fully self-contained vehicles, which generally means onboard fresh water, wastewater holding and a toilet.

The Newell carries B-doubles, grain trucks and long-haul freight. They are doing their job; your job is to be predictable. Hold your line, keep left, and wait for proper overtaking lanes rather than trying to slingshot a high-sided campervan around a truck in a crosswind.

Wildlife is most active around dawn and dusk, especially between Coonabarabran, Gilgandra, West Wyalong and the Riverina. Kangaroos do not respect your itinerary. If you are running late, stop earlier rather than pushing into the last light.

• UHF: channel 40 is commonly used by truck drivers; useful if your van has a radio fitted.
• Tyres: check pressures cold every few days, including after long hot runs. Heat and under-inflation are a bad marriage.
• Breaks: plan a stop every 2 hours. A bakery pie counts as road safety if eaten while stationary.

In wet periods, the Newell and surrounding local roads can flood. Do not drive through water. Campervans are not submarines, and rental agreements tend to have a sense of humour failure about flood crossings.

There are a few excellent side steps if you have an extra night. Moree's artesian baths are a fine reset after the first big leg. The Warrumbungle National Park near Coonabarabran gives you big skies and proper dark, though national park camps must be booked and pets are not allowed. Dubbo is the practical mid-route resupply stop, and Echuca gives you the Murray River before the last 90 km into Bendigo.

Be cautious with map-app shortcuts across minor roads, especially after rain. A sealed highway route that is 20 km longer is usually better than a corrugated local road with soft shoulders, unfenced stock and no turning space for a motorhome.

• Good van detours: Moree baths, Warrumbungles via sealed access, Parkes Radio Telescope, Tocumwal river camps when conditions allow, Echuca port precinct.
• Check first: national park booking rules, fire bans, dog restrictions and whether your hire agreement permits unsealed campground access.
• Avoid: Pilliga dirt-road shortcuts unless you have written permission and a suitable vehicle; most standard campervans are 2WD sealed-road machines.

This is the sort of inland run where the boring decision is usually the clever one. Save the heroics for choosing between vanilla slice and lamington.
