Toowoomba to Brisbane campervan: the useful downhill run

The direct Toowoomba to Brisbane motorhome road trip is about 127 km via the A2 Warrego Highway and M2, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes in clean traffic. That is the number on paper. In a hired motorhome, with a supermarket stop, a nervous co-driver, and a fridge that needs sensible packing, it can feel like the first act of the Big Lap.

If you are already comfortable with the van, go direct. If this is your first day behind a 6 to 7.5 metre vehicle, take the Lockyer Valley slowly and consider a night around Gatton, Lake Dyer, Laidley or Ipswich before pushing into Brisbane traffic.

• Fastest sensible line: Toowoomba Bypass or Range route, Warrego Highway, Ipswich Motorway, Brisbane.
• Better van rhythm: Toowoomba to Withcott, Gatton, Laidley, Ipswich, then Brisbane next morning.
• Do: plan your Brisbane arrival outside 7:00–9:00 am and 3:30–6:00 pm weekday peaks.
• Do not: assume a CBD car park will welcome a 3 metre-high motorhome. Many will not.

The range descent is the one part of this route that deserves a proper cup of tea and a clear head. The old Toowoomba Range section has steep grades, tight curves and heavy vehicles; the newer Toowoomba Bypass is easier for many drivers but may involve toll billing through your hire account. Either way, gravity is keen.

You are not dealing with triple road trains here like you might west of Roma, but you will share the road with B-doubles, livestock trucks and tradies who know every bend. Let them go. A campervan is a small home on wheels, not a rally car with a toilet.

Good supply towns are Toowoomba, Withcott, Gatton, Plainland, Laidley, Rosewood, Ipswich and Brisbane. Toowoomba and Ipswich are also the easiest places to do a proper reset: supermarket, bottle-o, laundry, drinking water top-up, LPG swap or fill, and a dump point search before city rules get fiddly.

• Fuel spacing: Toowoomba to Withcott 21 km; Withcott to Gatton 25 km; Gatton to Laidley 21 km; Ipswich to Brisbane about 40 km.
• Water: top up only from signed potable taps; showgrounds and holiday parks are usually easiest.
• Waste: use signed dump points only and confirm access on the day through council listings or a camping app.
• Do not: tip grey water into stormwater drains or behind a rest area tree. That is how free camps get shut.

The hardest part of a short route is not the kilometres; it is deciding where the van legally sleeps. Brisbane and nearby councils generally do not want people overnighting in streets, beach car parks or suburban lay-bys. Fines can land around the $300 mark, which is a grim way to fund your first night.

The practical move is simple: camp legally before the Brisbane squeeze, then enter the city clean, emptied and watered. Showgrounds and holiday parks suit powered sites, while lakeside and low-key campgrounds in the Lockyer Valley suit unpowered nights if your hire vehicle is self-contained.

• For a first hire night: choose a powered site so you can learn the fridge, battery monitor, hose and dump cassette without performing for an audience at a free camp.
• For pets: check every campground before booking; national parks in Queensland generally do not allow dogs.
• For generators: assume restrictions apply unless the campground clearly says otherwise.
• For free camping: obey signs, stay one night where signed, and leave no water, rubbish or awning pegs behind.

You can drive Toowoomba to Brisbane in one sitting, but a two-day version is better if you are collecting the van, testing the bed, or easing into a longer Queensland run. The Lockyer Valley gives you produce stalls, flat roads, short hops and enough space to sort your gear before Brisbane narrows the shoulders and raises everyone’s blood pressure.

Day one: descend the range, stop in Gatton or Laidley, buy something grown within cooee, and sleep legally. Day two: roll through Ipswich after the school rush, empty the cassette if needed, then continue into Brisbane with the van lighter, the driver calmer and the navigator less likely to mutter.

• Summer note: December to February often brings 25–34°C days and afternoon storms.
