The Toowoomba to Kalgoorlie campervan run, without the guesswork

australiamotorhomes.com

Red dust in the mirrors, a road train filling the windscreen, and a servo pie cooling on the dash: the Toowoomba to Kalgoorlie campervan route is not a quick duck across the map. It is roughly 3,650–3,750 km of blacksoil plains, mining towns, saltbush, Nullarbor limestone and big-sky Goldfields.

This guide is for self-drivers sleeping in the van, not people hopping between motels. You’ll get the practical bones of the Toowoomba to Kalgoorlie drive: where to break it, fuel ranges that matter, dump-point thinking, free-camp cautions, road-train manners and when to check availability online before the good vans are already pointed west.

LEG BY LEG

The drive, broken down

Good outback rhythm begins here; Bourke is the sensible fuel and lunch stop.

How long to allow, and why six days is a punishment

The clean, all-bitumen line runs Toowoomba to Goondiwindi, Moree, Walgett, Bourke, Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, across the Nullarbor to Norseman, then north to Kalgoorlie. It is a proper toowoomba to kalgoorlie motorhome road trip, not a long weekend with laundry.

You can physically drive it in about 38–42 wheel-turning hours, depending on roadworks, wind and how often you stop to stare at nothing in particular. Sensible self-drivers allow 9–12 days, with one rest day at Broken Hill or Ceduna and a slower Nullarbor crossing if the weather gets punchy.

  • Do: plan around 350–500 km driving days for comfort, with one 600 km Nullarbor day only if everyone is fresh.
  • Don’t: drive dawn or dusk if you can avoid it; roos, goats and emus treat the bitumen like a town square.
  • Allow: at least one powered site every 2–3 nights for charging, laundry, air-con and civilised showers.

Toowoomba to Cobar: blacksoil country, floodways and early habits

The first couple of days lull people into thinking the west is easy. Toowoomba to Goondiwindi is around 222 km via the Gore Highway, then Goondiwindi to Walgett is about 337 km through Moree country. After rain, the blacksoil edges can be boggy enough to swallow a thong; stay on formed surfaces and do not nose the hire campervan into inviting-looking paddock tracks.

Walgett to Cobar via Bourke is roughly 389 km. The Bourke to Cobar stretch is about 160 km, but the more important habit is topping up before you need to. In a camper using 11–14 L/100 km, a 75 L tank may give a theoretical 530–680 km; headwinds and air-con will happily steal that margin.

  • Fuel sense: fill at Goondiwindi, Moree, Bourke and Cobar rather than gambling on small-town hours.
  • Water sense: top up potable water at town caravan parks or signed public taps only; bore water can be salty.
  • Camp sense: Cobar is a good first red-dirt overnight, with free-camp and powered options depending on battery levels.
03

Cobar, Broken Hill and Port Augusta: the outback starts talking

Cobar to Broken Hill is about 457 km along the Barrier Highway, with Wilcannia roughly 260 km from Cobar and another 196 km to Broken Hill. That 260 km Cobar-to-Wilcannia run is one of the first sections where you should leave town full, even if the fuel gauge is being smug.

Broken Hill earns a proper pause. It has supermarkets, laundries, dump points, mechanics, galleries, a bottle-o and enough mining-town character to make the van feel like it has arrived somewhere. From there, Broken Hill to Port Augusta is around 410 km, crossing into South Australia where quarantine and fruit-fly rules can apply; check current rules before carrying boxes of fresh produce across borders.

  • Do: dump the toilet cassette before long highway days; a full cassette on corrugation-adjacent bitumen is nobody’s spiritual journey.
  • Don’t: rely on night arrivals at small roadhouses; hours can change, especially outside peak grey-nomad season.
  • Watch: crosswinds near open plains and road trains moving ore, stock and general freight.

Port Augusta to Ceduna: last big reset before the Nullarbor

Port Augusta to Ceduna is about 468 km, usually via Kimba and Wudinna. This is your last big, practical reset before the Nullarbor proper: groceries, scripts, tyre-pressure check, LPG if your camper uses it, and enough drinking water for a hot day stuck behind roadworks.

Ceduna is also where many travellers finally admit they have packed too much fruit. Heading west, Western Australia quarantine is still ahead at the border, and fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and some seeds are common troublemakers. Eat it, cook it, bin it properly or do not buy it yet.

  • Fuel range: Port Augusta to Kimba is about 154 km, Kimba to Wudinna about 100 km, and Wudinna to Ceduna about 210 km.
  • Do: use Ceduna for a powered night if batteries, fridge and tempers need recovery.
  • Don’t: carry loose firewood across borders or into parks unless rules clearly allow it.
05

Crossing the Nullarbor without turning it into a survival podcast

Ceduna to Madura is roughly 660 km, but it is not 660 km without fuel. Key westbound stops include Penong about 74 km from Ceduna, Nundroo about 154 km further, Nullarbor Roadhouse about 144 km after that, then Border Village around 184 km on. Eucla is only about 12 km past the border, followed by Mundrabilla, Madura, Cocklebiddy, Caiguna, Balladonia and Norseman.

The big psychological marker is the 90 Mile Straight between Caiguna and Balladonia: 146.6 km of straight road where your thoughts become oddly loud. Roadhouse fuel can sit well above city prices; $2.20–$2.80 per litre is not unusual in remote stretches, so budget with a sense of humour and do not run the tank low to save five bucks.

  • Do: pull completely off the road at signed lookouts or rest areas; the shoulder is not a campsite.
  • Don’t: feed wildlife or leave food scraps out; dingoes and crows are better organised than some travellers.
  • Border rule: expect a WA quarantine inspection near the border and declare anything you are unsure about.
06

Norseman to Kalgoorlie: Goldfields roads and the final easy mistake

Norseman to Kalgoorlie is about 188 km, which feels like a victory lap after the Nullarbor. Do not get too casual. The Goldfields has mining traffic, long straight sections, heat shimmer and drivers who have been doing 100 km/h for days and are now mentally already in the shower.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a strong finish for a toowoomba to kalgoorlie drive: powered sites, dump points, supermarkets, fuel, laundries and enough mining hardware to remind your campervan it is the small vehicle here. If you are collecting or returning a van on a tight date, build in a buffer day before booking onward flights or side trips.

  • Road-train etiquette: hold your line, leave a big gap, and only overtake when you can see a long, empty road ahead.
  • Vehicle check: know your height, often around 3.0–3.4 m, before servo canopies, trees and old town awnings.
  • Book smart: check availability online early for one-way campervan hire, especially in winter Big Lap season.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Questions self-drivers actually ask

How many days do I need for a Toowoomba to Kalgoorlie campervan trip?
Allow 9–12 days for a comfortable self-drive trip. You can do it faster, but long 600 km days get old quickly in a motorhome, especially with road trains, heat and setup time at camp.
Is the Toowoomba to Kalgoorlie route suitable for a 2WD campervan?
Yes, the main route described here is sealed all the way. Avoid unsealed station tracks, beach access, muddy shoulders and remote national-park roads unless your hire conditions specifically allow them.
Where are the main fuel gaps?
Plan around Cobar to Wilcannia at about 260 km, Wilcannia to Broken Hill at about 196 km, Ceduna to Nullarbor Roadhouse at about 296 km if you skip smaller stops, and Balladonia to Norseman at about 191 km. Fill early, particularly outside business hours.
Can I free camp on this route?
Yes, in signed rest areas, approved council sites and legal free camps, but rules change by state and shire. Stay self-contained, do not dump grey water or toilet waste, obey time limits and never camp just because a patch of gravel looks lonely.
What should I know about road trains?
They can be over 50 m long and throw wind, spray and stones. Keep left, hold a steady line, give them room at roadhouses, and if one moves to overtake you, ease off slightly once it is safe so it can clear you quickly.
What happens at the WA quarantine checkpoint?
Entering Western Australia, expect checks for fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants, seeds and other restricted items. Eat or dispose of risky produce before the border, keep receipts for packaged goods, and declare anything uncertain.
