It is about 390 km if you run through Belyando Crossing, and while Belyando Crossing Roadhouse is the obvious middle stop, you should not treat any single remote servo as a guarantee. Fill in Charters Towers, top up if available at Belyando, and fill again at Clermont or Emerald.

Further south, Roma to St George is an easy 196 km, but St George to Lightning Ridge is about 235 km with Hebel in between. After Lightning Ridge, the run to Dubbo is around 354 km via Walgett, Coonamble and Gilgandra. None of that is terrifying in a modern campervan, but it is exactly where a half tank and a headwind make people suddenly religious.

• Safe fuel habit: refuel by half a tank once you are west of the coast.
• Useful range: aim for at least 450–500 km real-world range, allowing for air-con, wind and weight.
• Servo reality: some smaller towns shut early on Sundays or public holidays.
• Water: carry 20–40 L drinking water separate from the onboard tank.

There are enough powered holiday parks and showground-style stops on this route that you do not need to freestyle in supermarket car parks. Charters Towers, Emerald, Roma, St George, Lightning Ridge, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Ballarat all have proper campervan options with showers, laundry and a place to plug in when the Queensland heat has bullied your batteries.

Free and low-cost camping exists, but it is never a blank cheque. Many town camps have 20–48 hour limits, self-contained rules, no generators after certain hours, and strict rubbish expectations. National parks in Queensland, NSW and Victoria generally require online booking before you arrive, even for basic unpowered sites.

• Do: use marked bays, obey stay limits and keep grey water contained where required.
• Don’t: dump grey water on the ground unless signage specifically allows it.
• Tip: powered sites every second or third night keep batteries, laptops and tempers topped up.
• Check: local council pages and camping apps on the day; closures after rain are common.

A good Big Lap veteran can discuss dump points with the calm authority of a surgeon. On this route, plan cassette stops around larger towns: Charters Towers, Emerald, Roma, St George, Lightning Ridge, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Ballarat commonly have public or park-access dump facilities, often near showgrounds, visitor centres or caravan parks.

LPG swap-and-go bottles are generally easy in the bigger towns, less certain in the smaller ones. If your hired motorhome has built-in gas rather than a swap bottle, confirm refill points before you leave Townsville. The boring jobs are best done in daylight, not after a six-hour drive when the mosquitoes have formed a committee.

• Dump point rule: toilet cassette contents only unless the sign says otherwise.
• Chemicals: use RV-safe toilet chemicals; some eco-dump points dislike harsh additives.
• LPG: top up before remote legs, especially if you cook most meals in the van.
• Water fill: never assume a tap is potable unless marked drinking water.

Townsville and inland Queensland can sit in the low-to-mid 30s °C for long stretches, and the wet season from about November to April can close roads with floodwater that looks shallow until it is not. Road trains and cattle trucks are normal north of Roma and around the mining corridors. Hold your line, ease left only when it is safe, and let them pass without turning the shoulder into a dust experiment. By the time you reach Ballarat, the joke is on you: summer can still bring a cold change, and winter nights can drop close to 0 °C.

• Do: drive with headlights on in dusty or wet conditions.
