Townsville to Mildura campervan route: inland, sealed and properly big

You can drive Townsville to Mildura in 6 or 7 long days if you are tidy with early starts and not allergic to instant coffee. A better townsville to mildura motorhome road trip is 9 to 12 days, which lets you stop at Winton, Longreach, Charleville, Bourke, Cobar or Broken Hill without arriving everywhere after dark like a startled possum.

The route below stays on sealed highways: Flinders Highway, Landsborough/Matilda Way, Mitchell Highway, Kidman Way, Barrier Highway and Silver City Highway. Out here, a servo can close early, run short after flooding, or simply be 200 km behind you. Carry at least 10–20 litres of drinking water per person in the hotter months, plus tank water for washing. Most holiday parks and many showgrounds have potable water taps; do not assume every roadside rest area does.

Your first night out of Townsville is easiest around Charters Towers or Hughenden, depending on pickup time. Charters Towers is only about 136 km inland, which is handy if the handover takes longer than expected and you are still learning which cupboard makes the rattling noise. Hughenden makes a stronger first push at about 381 km total.

Across Queensland’s inland towns, showgrounds and council-run RV areas are common, but rules vary: some require self-contained vehicles, some limit stays to 24 or 48 hours, and some are seasonal. In New South Wales and Victoria, camping beside a river does not automatically mean legal camping. Read the signs, use council-listed sites, and leave the heroic stealth-camping for people who enjoy fines.

• Good paid stops: Charters Towers, Longreach, Charleville, Bourke, Cobar, Broken Hill and Mildura all have powered holiday park options.
• Useful cheaper-style stops: showgrounds or council RV areas may be available in Hughenden, Winton, Blackall, Cunnamulla and Wentworth — check current local rules before you roll in.
• Dump points: plan on using public dump points in major service towns; confirm in a current camping app or council listing before relying on one.
• Do: book powered sites in school holidays, winter grey-nomad season and around big regional events.
• Don’t: empty cassette toilets anywhere except a proper dump point. Nobody wants to be that headline.

Road trains are part of the scenery from the moment you leave Townsville’s coastal humidity. Give them room, especially between Charters Towers, Hughenden, Winton and Longreach, where long straights encourage big rigs to keep their rhythm. If one sits close behind you, find a safe pull-off and let it go; winning a drag race with 50 metres of freight is not a retirement plan.

The sealed route is straightforward, but weather changes the game. North and western Queensland can flood in the wet season, roughly November to April. Far-west NSW and the Murray can sit above 40°C in summer. Tyres, fridges and people all get grumpy in that heat, especially on unpowered sites.

• Overtaking: wait for long, clear straights and remember your motorhome is taller and slower than a ute.
• Road edges: soft shoulders can drop away; avoid half-lane wandering when road trains pass.
• Dirt roads: skip tempting shortcuts via Birdsville, Innamincka, Mungo back tracks or station roads unless your hire agreement specifically permits them.
• Vehicle height: know your van’s clearance before service-station awnings, trees in caravan parks and low town bridges.
• Do: check QLD Traffic, Live Traffic NSW and VicTraffic before leaving each morning.

This route has proper outback pauses if you let it. Winton is dinosaur country with red-earth sunsets. Longreach is the classic grey-nomad gathering point, where every second van seems to have a folding chair deployed by 4 pm. Charleville is good for a practical reset: laundry, groceries, fuel and a powered night after a few dusty days.

Further south, Bourke and Cobar shift the drive into red-dirt NSW, then Broken Hill gives you a worthy two-night halt before the final run to the Murray. By the time you drop into Wentworth and Mildura, the landscape has changed from open scrub to river country, vines and citrus. A bottle-o, a dump point and a flat powered site can feel oddly luxurious.

• River finish: Wentworth to Mildura is only about 31 km, so do your last cassette dump and water fill without rushing.
