Townsville to Sunshine Coast campervan route, the sensible coastal way

Townsville to the Sunshine Coast is roughly 1,250 km if you keep your head down on the Bruce Highway, and closer to 1,380–1,430 km once you add sensible coastal stops like Agnes Water and Hervey Bay. In a campervan, that is not a two-day dash unless your idea of a holiday is eating servo pies in a plastic seat and muttering at roadworks.

Five days is comfortable, seven is better, and ten gives you time to wake up somewhere worth remembering. The Bruce is sealed all the way, but it is still Queensland: long straights, slow caravans, road trains north of Rocky, cane haulage in season and summer storms that can make a low-lying causeway look like a bad decision.

• Fast but tiring: 3 days, Townsville–Mackay–Rockhampton–Sunshine Coast.
• Practical: 5 days, with Bowen, Mackay/Cape Hillsborough, Rockhampton and Hervey Bay.
• Best self-drive pace: 7–9 days, adding Agnes Water, Bundaberg and a lazy morning near Noosa or Maroochydore.
• Do: start driving early and park by mid-afternoon.
• Don’t: plan a 500 km day in January heat and expect domestic harmony.

The Townsville to Sunshine Coast motorhome road trip is mostly Bruce Highway running, with easy sealed detours to the coast. Fuel is not remote-outback scarce, but the distances are still big enough to punish casual thinking. A van using 11–14 L/100 km will feel the difference between topping up in Mackay and gambling on the next cheap bowser.

The longest practical stretch on this route is Mackay to Rockhampton at about 335 km. There are servos at Sarina and Marlborough, but do not roll out of Mackay on fumes because “it looked close on the map”. It never looks far until the fuel light comes on behind a road train doing its own weather system.

• Townsville to Ayr: about 88 km, cane country and regular servos.
• Ayr to Bowen: about 112 km, easy sealed highway, watch for farm machinery.
• Bowen to Mackay: about 195 km via Proserpine, good fuel options.
• Mackay to Rockhampton: about 335 km, break it at Sarina, Clairview or Marlborough.
• Rockhampton to Bundaberg: about 320 km if going direct, with Gladstone and Miriam Vale as logical stops.
• Maryborough to Sunshine Coast: about 165–220 km depending on whether you start from Maryborough or Hervey Bay.

Queensland has plenty of overnight options for self-contained vans, but “I saw another camper there” is not a legal camping strategy. Council rules change by town, national parks require pre-booked permits, and many beach car parks are day-use only. If a sign says no overnight, it means your van too, even if the sunset is being persuasive.

For a first night out of Townsville, Home Hill or Bowen works well. Bowen gives you powered sites near the water and a shorter second-day run; Home Hill is more of a practical grey-nomad stop with facilities and less romance. Further south, Mackay, Rockhampton, Agnes Water, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay all have paid parks, public dump points in town or nearby, and supermarkets big enough to fix poor meal planning.

• Powered sites: best after humid driving days when you want air-con and a proper recharge.
• Unpowered sites: fine in mild weather if your battery, fridge and water use are under control.
• Free or low-cost camps: check time limits, self-contained rules and whether generators are allowed.
• National parks: book online before arrival; many have no bins, no power and strict generator rules.
• Dump points: plan around Bowen, Mackay, Rockhampton, Miriam Vale/Agnes Water, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Gympie rather than waiting until the cassette is plotting revenge.

May to October is the easiest window: cooler nights, lower humidity and fewer flood dramas. Daytime temperatures often sit around 24–30°C in winter and spring, though inland-feeling stretches near Rockhampton can still warm up properly. From November to April, expect humidity, storms and the chance of localised flooding after heavy rain.

The Bruce Highway is sealed, but it is not immune to water. After big wet-season systems, low sections near creeks and floodplains can close, and the detours are not always motorhome-friendly. If the road is signed closed or water is over it, do not be the hero on the evening news; a rental campervan is not a boat with curtains.

• Cane harvest: roughly June to November in many districts; expect slow cane trucks near Ayr, Bowen, Proserpine and Mackay.
• Road trains: give them room, especially north of Rockhampton; if one overtakes, hold your line and ease off slightly.
• Heat: in summer, a powered site can be worth it for air-con and battery recovery.
• Rain: check Queensland traffic updates before committing to a long day.
• Wildlife: avoid dawn and dusk driving where possible; roos and wallabies do not read insurance excess clauses.

A 2WD campervan or motorhome is suitable for this route if you stay on sealed roads and use proper campgrounds. Most hire vehicles are not allowed on unsealed tracks, beaches or tidal crossings, and that matters around tempting side trips. K’gari, Noosa North Shore beach sections and rough national-park access roads are generally not for standard 2WD motorhomes.

Before you book, think about height, length and how you camp. A compact campervan is easier in supermarket car parks and older coastal holiday parks; a larger motorhome gives you a toilet, shower and more water capacity, which helps with free-camping and remote-ish overnighters. Either way, check availability online early for winter school holidays and the grey-nomad migration months.

• Height: many motorhomes sit around 2.7–3.4 m; watch servo awnings, trees and car-park entries.
• Length: larger vans may be 6–7.5 m; book sites that can actually fit you.
• Water: refill before beach camps or national-park stays; taps are not guaranteed.
• LPG: swap or refill at larger servos and hardware-style outlets in bigger towns.
• Self-contained camping: a toilet on board opens more options, but you still need to use dump points properly.
